Better Highways Decatur area drivers will be directly benefitted by the opening Dec. 15 of another section of 1-69, 11.58 mile» in Delaware county, which will mean 45.426 miles of 1-69 in that area, from west of Pen- \ dleton in Madison county to state road 18 in Grant county, will be open to traffic. Unfortunately the 13.7 miles between US 6 and US 20 in the DeKalb - Steuben counties area cannot open to traffic this year because asphalt shoulders could not be completed before winter weather set in. Opening will be deferred until late spring of next year. However, 77'/z miles of I-69’b designated 157.6 miles in Indiana will be open by Dec. 15. And by late next year, the Indianapolis to Michigan expressway will have 128.6 miles open between Pendleton and Angola. For those who have cottages north of Fort Wayne in Steuben county, or up in Michigan, the new highway will be very important. For those who drive to Indianapolis frequently, it will be just as important. The overpass at. Markle, where 1-69 crosses highway 224, is now practically complete, and no doubt this section will open late next summer. The real fly in the ointment is the stretch from Pendleton to Indianapolis. Our capital city will be belted by a four-lane highway, but arguments over the right-of-way have delayed purchase on the cast side of the city, while the south and west stretches are already complete. Those who have used th 5 e west and south parts know what a happy day it will be for motorists when the entire belt highway is completed, and you can speed around Indianapolis, rather than inch through it. Another bugaboo has been reached in the lake district in'northern l Steuben county, where there is a small stretch connecting with the Michigan line that The cost of our interstate system is running about SBOO,OOO a mile. It will save untold lives, time, and human frustration. It is another example of wise Federal planning, and wise cooperation between the Federal and state governments. When we vacation over the 2,200 miles of interstate in Indiana we can appreciate the vision of those who urged a hesitant public to accept the idea. Editorial Written by Dick Heller
