by Bob Shraluka Monmouth's downtrodden Eagles battled and scrambled for four periods Friday night before finally dropping a tw<>ix>int decision, 80-58, to the Decatur Catholic Commodores at the Decatur gymnasium. C. C. Hands Jackets Third Defeat, 75-65
By Mike Thoele The Decatur Yellow Jackets, led by Sam Blythe's 17 points and looking like a completely different ball club than the one which dropped its first two games to Muncie South and Berne, took a 75-65 defeat Friday night after waging a hard-fought contest contest with a tall Fort Wayne Central Catholic team. Blythe’s 17-point contribution of seven field goals and three free throws during the game at Fort Wayne’s Bishop Dwenger high school an effort second only to that of C.C.’s Al Gutman, who led the Irish and was high scorer of the evening by virtue of 22 points on ten field goals and two free throws. The Jackets fought a nip and tuck battle in the first and second quarters, dropped as far as seventeen points behind in the third, and rallied to within six late in the fourth. Despite the height of the Central Catholic srwad the Decatur team did a better-than-averaae reboundina iob and .scored only two less field goals than the 30 two-nointers dropped in by Central Catholic. ♦ Fonling Made Difference But foulin o and free throws made the difference. Decatur’s 22 fouls netted Central Catholic a total of 28 shots from the charitv stripe — "nd 15 of them were good. The Central Catholic t°am fouled less heavily, and the Jackets were able to canitalize on only nine of their 17 free tosses. The Decatur team jumped off to an earlv first quarter lead on toe shooting strength of Sam Plvthe, Ron Smith, Dave Hammond and Dave An.spaugh. They led-until the last 40 seconds of the neriod when the hot-shooting Gutman dropped in a 40-footer to pb’e C. C. a 13-12 margin, then added another to close the quarter at 15-12. Decatur'S Ron Smith got into 'totil trouble rafter drawing —his third early the see-• ond nerioa and sat oiit the remainder of the first half. The Jackets came within one point twice in the second Quarter — once on-a layup by Dave Anspaugh, making the score 25-26, and minutes later on a Dave Hammond shot which made it 29-28. They were nine points down, 41 32 at the half. Third Period Scoring In the third period Central Catholic returned from the dressFort Wayne Workman * Is Killed By Fall FORT WAYNE. Ind. ing room to do battle in earnest and sank four quick field goals to give them a 48-31 margin before Sam Blythe could break the ice with a two-pointer for the Yellow Jackets. The Irish, led by Gutman, stretched their lead to 15 and stayed within two points of that margin for the remainder of the quarter. The Yellow Jacket rally began early in the fourth period, with Dave Smith contributing three field goals and Jerry Egly adding another two. A free throw by Max Elliott, his lone point of the game, with 5:13 left in the game pulled the Jackets within eight points and set the score at 63-55. The teams traded bacskets for two mniutes, then the Yellow Jackets pulled within six points 'when Dave Smith dropped in a long shot from the corner. This was as close as the Jackets were to come, as Central Catholic countered with three quick field goals and two free throws while the Decatur team produced only four more noints to set the final score at 75-65.
