The Ghost Writer Writes You may have heard the term “ghost writer” before, but never quite knew what it meant. Well, a ghost writer is someone who writes for another person. Such as Jack Jones writing something which appears *in a column under Sam Jones’ name. Ford Frick, now the Commissioner of baseball was a ghost writer for Babe Ruth when the Babe was hammering all those home runs back in the 20’s. We too have a ghost writer. He does a great job, but he has one fault — he’s slow. Just today he turned in his story on the Berne-Decatur game, but it was so good that we decided to use it anyway. Under the headline, “Berne’s Beer Staggers Jackets,” here it is: “Some like it hot — some like it cold. Berne likes their Beer hot and that’s exactly what was served up in the Palace of Pleasure gymnasium at Berne on Tuesday night. As our Jackets staggered howeward, one was heard to mutter that ’they only had a Beer.’ Actually, they really had two Bears — a tall one (Larry) and a short one (Rick). Bear fans found the hot Beer (tail one) intoxicating as he poured in 28 points, although he did have some smooth shots and very few chasers.” “The gym was packed and a bouncer in a striped shirt thinned the crowd out early by telling Bill Blythe he had too much. Decatur sipped on the cup of victory in the third quarter, but Berne had ‘one for the road’ at the end and gave the Jackets only a chaser. After viewing Tuesday evening’s contest this writer certainly agrees with the bulk of the populace of Berne. They didn’t really need another tavern — they’ve already got too much Beer for Decatur.” - • Nor w honestly*tiMn’t *write thmbover Its a '-i—--a ghyst . writer to remain anonymous. The only trouble with his fine work, in addition to being late, is that the name Beer is pronounced Bear. • * • ♦ • • “He proved he was short on experience, but does have potential,” was the word we received from Earlham College about Craig McEwan, last season’s Yellow Jacket center. A 6-4 freshman, McEwan got into some action in the City of Richmond Basketball Tournament recently and then scored six points in a 117-69 loss to DePauw last Tuesday night. The lanky McEwan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack McEwan of 133 Harvester Lane here, scored from the field and hit Jour of six at the charity stripe. Other members of the Quakers are Neal Wissmap of New Haven and Jack Zell of Winchester. We noticed also that Mike Kock, the»former Garrett star, was named to the Richmond meet’s all-tourney team. Get this one. The West Noble School board has voted unanimously to end basketball games involving its three schools, Cromwell, Ligonier and v'lwaka, beginning in 1965. The Kendallville News Sun quoted Superintendent Glen Logenbaugh, who urged the board to end the basketball competition within the district, as saying, “There is nothing particular to be gained from this competition. One silly incident at a game would do more harm in five minutes than could be undone in five years.” are “not as competitive.” The district hopes soon the competition in track and other sports as they He added that he had no objections to continuing to have all the three consolidated into a single high school Wonder if they’ll vote out sectional tourney competition next.
Howard To Senators; Phils Get Belinsky • Big Frank Reward was the central figure in a six-player swap between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Senators that was one of two big interleague deals made Friday on the final day of the Major League basebail meetings. Howard, third baneman Ken McMullen and young pitchers Phil Ortega and Pete Richert were peddled to the Senators for southpaw Claude Osteen, infielder John Kennedy, and an estimated $50,000 in cash. In the other deal, playoff lefty Bo Belinsky was sent by the Los Angeles Angels to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for a pair of minor league prospects — tong-ball hitting first baseman Costen Shockley and iastballing southpaw Rudy May. The ffoal day also produced a third trade which sent Minnesota Twin lefty Gerry Arrigo to Cincinnate. for infielder Cesar Tovar.
