Hopes for rescue rose Friday when Premier Moise Tshombe announced that the Congolese army already has saved 600 other whites since Belgian paratrooiM'rs ended their "mercy mission” Nov. 27. The paratroopers, dropped into the Stanleyville area from U.S. planes have been credited with’vsaving 1,800 whites from possible death at the hands of the Communist inspired rebels. The rebels had proclaimed Stanleyville their “capital.” Official sources said 88 whites have been killed and 96 wounded in rebel territory since the Belgians jumped off Nov. 24. The death toll was lower than had been feared. Tshombe said the Congolese army was driving on Watsa, near the Uganda border, where *'a substantial number” of ■whites were believed held by the rebels. There was no numerical estimate, however.

Thinking of Spring Whiter hnan't even started, but truu flower lovers hi Adorns county will already be planning for spring. And probably at least 100 of them will want to attend the 7th annual World Flower and Garden •how at McCormick Place in Chicago, March 20-28. Jk Mere than plants, trees and shrubs are new beta* dwg for “coid throughout . the winter to aaanre their finest foliage and bloom to welcome apring. Advance tickets through local garden elube are 50c cheaper than general admission tickets, which will be >1.75 for adults, and 90c for children. Almost 100,000 spring - flowering bulbs have been potted and are being wintered at temperatures too low for normal or rapid growth. As flower show time draws near. These bulbs will be placed in warm areas where their growth will be accelerated. There are many methods of storing trees and shrubs for Spring indoor blossoming. Large trees are “baßed” after cold weather prevents further growth and then moved indoors where they remain at near freezing temperatures until the date for forcing. Flowering shrubs, such as forsythla and lilacs, are kept in dimly lit comers of greenhouses where the temperature hovers around 60 degrees throuhgout the winter. When their growing dates arrive they are transferred to steam rooms where the temperature and humidity force rapid growth. In addition to “nursing” these 90,000 plants of 2,000 varities and 700 species through the winter, other skilled landscape purveyors are preparing 5,700 square feet of sod and 3 million pounds of top soil fear the lavish expanse of indoor gardens. Then, of course, the human element of prepping for the show is already requiring combined efforts totalling thousands of hours a week in just planning for this floral masterpiece. It will be worth seeing! Editorial Written hy Dick Heller
