of the Berne public schools and of the First Mennonite church. Accompanying the 240 voices of the choir will be Mrs. L. A. Neuen, organist, and Mrs. Sherman Stucky, pianist. Although the choral society includes most of the membership of the chancel choir of Berne’s First Mennonite church, .more than half its members are from other churches. A number of Decatur residents are members
of the choir. Twelve area communities are represented in the choir and some society members travel as far as 70 fhiles round trip for the group’s rehearsals and the performances. The choral society’s perennial production of “The Messiah” has had only one interuption since its inception in 1936. The interuption came in 1942 when severe gasoline rationing regula-
tions curtailed travel for rehearsals. The choral society is one of the oldest organizations in the Berne community. The group was formed about 1875 and gave its first presentation of “The Messiah” in 1891, accompanied by a borrowed baby grand piano and reed organ. Expenses for the present choral society are met by freewill offer-\ ings received at its performances.
