Both Decatur Teams, Berne Professional Open Campaigns This Week Grid Leagues

By the end of this week, all six Adams County basketball teams will have “gotten their feet wet" in the still-infant season. Both Decatur teams, the Commorodes and Yellow Jackets, lift the lid on their 64-65 schedules this week, as do the Berne Bears. Adams Central and Geneva will also be in action during the week, while the other county team, Monmouth, “sits out” this week. Two games are on tap Tuesday, including a county battle in Decatur, two on Friday and a single one on Saturday night. The Decatur Commodores, halted in their scheduled season opener Friday night when Larwill failed to arrive due to an accident, will try again Tuesday night to get things started when they host the Flying Jets from Adams Central. The game will be played in the Decatur high school gymnasium. Tough Opener Its a tough way for the Commodores and new coach Bob Boyle to have to open their season. The tall and talented Jets, unbeaten in two outings, have given indication that they are not planning to relinquish that first section title of last spring. The Jets opened their season back on November 6 with a 6261 triumph over Leo, and last Friday blasted Lancaster Central by a 79-46 count. Rog Schnepp, 6-3 junior center, is the team’s leading scorer with 37 tailies, but the Monroe lads have shown a balanced attack and plenty of board power, with 6-3 Art Ringger and 6-2 Fex Funk aiding Schnepp in" the rebounding department. Probable Commodore starters are 6-2 Terry Myers, 6-2 Jim Schultz and 6-1 Bill Bolinger up IHL Standings W L T Pts Des Monies ..10 4 1 21 Fort Wayne.7 3 1 15 Toledo 7 4 0 14 Port Huron .... 5 6 1 11 Muskegon 4 7 19 Dayton 2 10 0 4 Saturday Scores Dayton 7, -Fort Wayne 6. front, with 6-0 Fat Gage and 5-8 Johp Lose, or 5-9 Tony Kohne in the backcourt. Cards At Bryant The Cardinals make a short trip from Geneva to neighboring Bryant for the other Tuesday night contest. The Cards made new coach Tom Agler’s debut a successful one last Friday with a 66-53 verdict over the Eagles at Monmouth. A big front line, beaded by 6-4 Jim Meshberger, was inpressive in the opening Cardinal win, but they’ll have to duplicate that performance to get past a rugged Bryant team that has a number at lettermen back from last season. Both Deeatars Hay Both Decatur quintets are in action Friday night, as the Yellow Jackets and Commodores both hit the road. The Yellow Jackets open their campaign under a new boss also( as Phil Miller moves in from Ligonier. But Miller faces a tough job in his debut, as the Jackets run into Muncie South at the Muncie Fieldhouse. Hie South Rebels have several players back from last year’s team that went to the semi-state round at Indianapolis, and reportedly will be the stronger of the two Muncie teams. (If the Bearcats’ suspenEagles Lose Al Harlan, 77-53 Harlan’s Hawks tossed in 42 points in the second half and romped to a 77-53 victory over Monmouth at the Allen County school’s gymnasium Saturday night. The loss was the fourth straight this season for the winless Eagles, who are now idle for more than a week. Their next game will be at the Decatur gymnasium on Tuesday night, December 1, when they entertain county foe Adams Central. Jerry DeLong, 6-3 Hawk center, scored 20 points Saturday in leading his club to its third win in five starts. The Hawks, who dropped a 58-53 decision to Wobdlan Friday night, held a 16-12 first period lead and then outscored the Eagles 19-8 in the second quarter for a 35-29 halftime lead. The winners tallied o 42 points in the final two rounds to coast to victory. Royden Delagrange trailed DeLong with 16 markers, and Steve Miller added 10. Danny Conrad again led the Eagles scoring with 19 tallies, and Mike Luginbill added 11. MONMOUTH FG FT TP Conrad 7 5 19 Whitman 3 2 8 T. Buuck — 3 0 6 M. slon is lifted the first of the year). Miller has several lettermen returning from last year’s club that copped just three victories in 20 outings. In their second game of the week, the Commodores will sojourn to Marion to meet Bennett on Friday night. Berne OMB The Berne Bears, riddled by graduation, will be the last county team to launch a new schedule when they travel to Huntington Saturday night. The Bears had only one regular returning, Rick Inniger, but he moved to Peru during the summer. It will definitely be a rebuilding year at Berne. The Vikes won 27 of 39 games last season before losing to Lafayette Jefferson, 58-55, in the finals of the state tourney, but won’t be that tough this time around. Gone from that team are Phil Underhill, Mike Weaver, Mike Shumaker, and Jim Seneff. Also Play Neighboring Monroeville and Hoagland each have a Wednesday night game on tap this week. The Cubs, winless in four starts, entertain a Harlan five that has won three of five games thus far, including a 77-53 win over Mon-, mouth. The ’Cats, who suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Bishop Luers Friday night, after three wins, seek to get back on the victory trail when they travel to Leo to meet a strong Lion quintet. Grapplers Open Here Tonight

Decatur high school’s wrestling team opens its 196445 season in the local gymnasium tonight, entertaining Noblesville. The first match is scheduled to begin at 7 o'clock. Coach Gary Giessler, who initiated the sport here back in 1961, has lost several star performers from last year’s club that posted a fine 10-3 record, but also has several other veterans returning. The Decatur High School Booster Club will hold its annual “Parents Night” ceremonies this evening, with parents of the grapplers receiving special seats and being introduced. Tonight's meet is the only one at home until Dec. 12. The wrestlers have 12 regular matches, plus two tournaments, this season. On Saturday, December 12, Central, Central Catholic and Concordia of Fort Wayne will vie in a four-team meet at the local gym. On January 9, the season schedule is as follows: Tonight — Noblesville H Dec. 3—Manchester ...T Dec. s—New Haven T

Komefs Beat Gems, 9-1, After Loss The Fort Wayne Komets split a pair of games with the International Hockey League’s newest entry, the Dayton Gems, during the weekend. And they did it in an unusual way. Saturday night the Komets dropped a 7-6 decision to the Gems at Memorial Coliseum. Ted Wright’s shot from the blue line with slightly more than three minutes to play tied the contest at 6-6, but player - coach Warren Back iced the Dayton win with a goal in the final two minutes. Len Thomson got a pair of goals for the K’s, while Bill Orban, John Goodwin, and Reg Primeau got one each. At Dayton’s new Hara arena Sunday night, the Komets scored thre goals in each period to romp to a 9-1 victory over the Gems. The contest was tied at 1-1 early in the opening period before the Fort Wayne skaters turned it into a romp. Thomson again got a pair of goals. After a game at Des Moines Tuesday, the Komets will enter- ' tain Toledo on Thanksgiving night. Sunday scoring summary. First Period Dayton: R. Brown (Regis, L’Ecuyer).
