Shraluka's Slants: Success Story Began In Jr. High

by Bob Shraluka Back in the fall of 1959, Decatur high school football fans were suffering through one of the school’s worst campaigns. When it was over, the Yellow Jackets had lost nine of nine, and worse, had been shut out through the first five game. Many fans didn’t realize though that better things were ahead when the first call came for Junior High football practice. There were six coaches handling the program for the school, without pay. They were Fred and John Isch, Jim Cowens,

Rangers, Now Third, Will Forgive Plante By United Press International The New York Rangers are willing today to forgive and forget all those things goalie Jacques Plante said about them. Plante criticized the Rangers from the front office to the skate boy earlier this year when he was assigned to New York’s Baltimore farm club in the American Hockey League. Among other things, Plante charged there was dissension in the Ranger clubhouse and a lack of solid hitting power on the New York backline. But it’s all forgotten now because the Rangers have wSStes three of four games with Plante in the nets, replacing the injured Marcel Faille, and have moved into third place in the National Hockey League, three points behind the first-place Detroit Red Wings. Plante turned aside 24 shots Tuesday night when the Rangers nipped the Red Wings, 2-1, to vault out of a tie with the Chicago Black Hawks and past the Toronto Maple Leafs. Rod Gilbert scored the Rangers’ winning goal at 12:42 of the third period to snap a 1-1 tie created by Alex Delvecchio’s goal at 6:31 of the same session. Camille Henry scored the Rangers’ first goal at 11:57 of the first period. There were no other Tuesday night games in the NHL.

Norm Steury, Ray Seitz and Dick Reidenbach. When it came time to pass out the uniforms for the team’s first game, a couple of the coaches decided to have a little fun. When a dark-haired seventh grader, one of the smallest players on the team, but already chosen to be the quarterback, walked into the dressing room at Worthman Field, the fqn began. Knowing the quiet little guy was a Baltimore Colt fan and that Johnny Unitas was his idol, they tossed him a folded up game shirt that bore number

Gilchrist, AFL’s Top Rusher, Leaves Bills

By MARTIN GLEASON United Press International BUFFALO, N. Y. (UPD—Old No. 34, Cookie Gilchrist, will be missing from the Buffalo lineup jEhanksgiy.jpg Day when the Bills collide with the San Diego Chargers in a battle of American Football League Titans. Gilchrist, the 29-year-old fullback of the Eastern Division leading Bills, lost his job Tuesday when head Coach Lou Saban offered Cookie’s services to other AFL teams for the SIOO waiver price. The Denver Broncos, weakest team in the league in 1963, have first crack at the 251-pound bulldozer. , In New York the Jets put in a bid for Cookie shortly after the 24-hour claiming period went into effect. “The club is more important than a single individual,” Saban said in announcing that the 6-foot-3 Gilchrist was finished after nearly three seasons in Buffalo. “A lot of incidents have taken place. I guess everybody knows about the last game.” Win Streak Ends The last game — Sunday against the Boston Patriots — signaled the end of Buffalo’s nine-game undefeated string. The Pats overcame the Bills 36-28 to pull within a game and one half of first place in the Eastern Division with a 7-2-1 record. Gilchrist gained only 31 yards, far below his normal output. The incident that apparently caused Saban to fire the league’s top rusher (751 yards in 165 carries) came late in the first half of the Boston game. “We asked him to go in and he apparently didn’t think he had to,” Saban said. Rookie Willie Ross of Nebraska took Gilchrist’s place at fullback. Ross and veteran Wray Carlton, shelved with broken ribs since the second game of the season, now are in the fight for the fullback post. Gilchrist Surprised Cookie, named the FL’s most valuable player in 1962 by United Press International after capturing the dashing crown in his first season with Buffalo,

19, that number that Unitas wore ’ then and stiU wears. Had Hoped The youngster had hoped, but was too bashful to ask, that he might receive number 19. When he unfolded the blue shirt, and that big white 19 stood out, a big grin lit up his face and he proudly walked out of the dressing room. That little guy was Dave Anspaugh, who quarterbacked the Decatur high football team to a record eight victories during the past season —a team that will be honored at tonight’s annual

reacted with surprise. “I was surprised at the timing of the bills’ action, although I had expected it to come at the end of the season," he said. “You may recall that I asked to be traded at the beginning of the season I felt I had not been used to my full potential as a 'fullback last season. I felt that failure to utilize me has been apparent throughout much of this season.” . Cookie, who spent eight years in Canadian football after a fine high school career in Breckenridge, Pa., said he couldn’t pinpoint any particular incident that might have incurred Saban’s displeasure. “I feel like a racehorse. I’m strong. I thought I was wasting away—a blocking back. I feel somebody will claim me.” Basketball-Wrestling Preview Thursday At 7 Athletic director Bob Worthman today reminded fans of the Thursday night wrestling-basket-ball preview in the Decatur high school gymnasium. The preview will begin at 7 o’clock tomorrow night with Gary Giessler sending his grapplers through some drills and matches. Booster Club football banquet That year’s Junior High team featured such standouts as Steve Hazelwood, and a seventh grade halfback who on many occasions electrified the small crowds that turned out, and five seasons later was still electrifying crowds. His name was Max Elliott. Other Members In the 1959 and 1960 seasons, the Junior Hi|h teams posted a brilliant 6-1-0 record. The resemblance between those teams and this year’s varsity is strik-< ing. A regular halfback was Bill Blythe. Playing the guard positions were Jerry Egly and Tim , Magley. A youngster, small at f that time, named John Eichenauer played tackle. In fact, of the 1960 team that won four of five, 13 players were on this year’s varsity. They were Anspaugh, Bill Blythe, Elliott, Eichenauer, Magley, Egly, Terry Smitley, Jack Stauffer, Steve Beavers, John Meeks, Gary Pettibone, John August, and a seventh grader playing in the backfield named Sam Blythe. Ron Smith and Tom Engle had injuries and couldn’t play, and the seventh grade team included fellows like Dave Snell, Rick Sommers, “Bugs” Sprunger, and several others on this season’s varsity. Move Up The following season, 1961, most of those boys moved up to the freshmaiT-sophomore team. Elliott . didn’t, he went straight to the varsity as a regular halfback. That was the year a big youngster named Darrell Grote moved in from the country. He was a student manager that year, began playing the following season, and this year was a regular tackle. There were other additions in the three years prior to this and Gary Busse, who moved in season. Such as Dave Hammond from Adams Central, Dave Smith and Tom Whitaker. There were too, sophomores who were factors in this year’s team. Such as Dave Anderson. Lon Hawkins, Nick Smitley and Bill Brown, also Junior High grads. Anspaugh took over as regular quarterback during a game with New Haven in his sophomore season, and remained there for the following two campaigns. Jerry Friedheim, Emmanuel Get Close Victories Emmanuel (Soest) nipped Zion of Decatur, 33-31, and Friedheim edged Preble, 32-29, in Lutheran Laymen League games played Sunday at Monmouth. Stan Oehle led the Emmanuel team with 10 points, while Gary Messmann had nine and Rohrback six. Zelt added four, and Grant Messmann and Steve Oehle had one each. The winning margin came as a result of a Decatur player scoring at the wrong goal. Steele’s 17 tallies led Decatur, while Moser scored seven, Davis three and Kenney and Osterman two each. Nuerge led Friedheim with 10 tallies, while Conrad and Miller scored six each, Gallmeyer four and Heckman, Fuhrman and Buuck added two apiece. Wefel's 12 markers led Preble, with Bieberich scoring six, Hoffman five. Reinking four and K. Bulmahn two.

Egly turned up at training sessions while a sophomore and became a sensation as a linebacker, despite a lack of size. He’s won two Most Tackles trophies. Progress Begins The 1962 team won only one game and tied one, but lost several games by from one to five points. The following season, 1963, the handwriting on the wall was apparent. Anspaugh and Elliott were joined by another former Junior Higher, Buster Melchi, plus the Blythe brothers, in the Also in 1963, Magley and Egly became regular offensive guards, A and Eichenauer became Hazel- ■ wood’s tackle partner. Several others saw a lot of varsity action, and the team won six of nine games. Then- came 1964! Geneva Starts Rebuilding Season At Monmouth Friday; Agler Back

By Bob Shrataka Like a couple of other teams in Adams County thia season, the Geneva Cardinals will bo undergoing that old process known as rebuilding, and they’ll be doing it under a new coach. Tom Agler, long-time — and successful — mentor at Hartford Center in thia county, is back In the varsity business, and makes his Geneva debut at Monmouth Friday night. Agler, after a year’s absence from the ranks of county basketball coaches, returns to replace Jerry Augsburger, who left Geneva last spring in a storm of controversy that ended with his resignation and a public letter that blasted school officials. Augsburger, a former star performer at Hartford Center, piloted Geneva to a Ml record last season, his lone year at the school, after he was named to replace Harry Anderson. Thus, the Cards have their third basketball boss in three seasons. Many Losses What caused all the commotion we don’t know, but we do know Meshberger Bollenbacher Ossian Rolls To 79-55 Win At Monroeville The powerful Ossian IJears rolled to their third victory without a loss this season as they whipped the Cubs at Monroeville by a 79-55 score. The Bears held a slim 14-12 lead after one period, but threw in 23 points in the second stanza to build a commanding 37-19 halftime lead. They continued the assault in the third period, and opened a 58-31 bulge entering the final eight minutes of play. « Elzey’s 21 tallies paced the winners, and all scorers. He got assistance from Windmiller, who scored 17, and Dishong who countered 15. Galen Mclntosh topped the Cubs with 19 points, and Powelson tallied 11. The,. Cubs, now winless after three Starts, will seek their first win Friday night at Arcola. that graduation depleted the Cardinal roster. Gone are two-time county scoring champ Mike Newcomer, 6-4 Bob McCabe, Jerry Buckingham. Jerry Alberson, Stan Ellenberger, Roger Lautzenheiser, and Phil Thornton. In fact, only five players return from last season’s sectional 12, and only one of those saw enough varsity action to earn a letter. That lone letterman, however, is Ron Bollenbacher, a 6-2, 170 senior veteran who at least gives Agler someone to build his club around. Strong On Boards The husky Bollenbacher is a strong rebounder and good defender, and is starting his third varsity, campaign. He didn't get to shoot often last season, and will have too fire much more this season. With the basketball ability he has shown in two previous seasons, Bollenbacher could become one of the county’s top scorers this year. » Also returning from that sectional roster are Jim Meshberger, John Binegar, Doug Edgar and Doug Bixler. Meshberger, the team's tallest at 6-4, and 175 pounds, saw some varsity competition last season, as did Binegar. 6-2, 150 pounds. Along with Bollenbacher, they are the only six-footers on the squad, and are also seniors. Edgar is a 5-11, 140 pound senior, and Bixler a 5-11, 155 pound senior. They saw little, if any, varsity play in ’63-’64.

J? Sat M. 1 SPEAKS HERE TONIGHT — Bill Wightkin, former star lineman for the Chicago Bears, will be the featured speaker tonight at the ninth annual Decatur high school Booster Club banquet. Ted Hill will emcee the affair, which will see the annual awards presentations made by the club. Monmouth, Berne Split Games Monday Night Monmouth and Berne split a junior high-freshmen doubleheader at the Berne gymnasium Tuesday night. The Eagle frcuh quintet nosed out the Berne freshmen by a 44-40 score in an overtime thriller. The Berne junior high copped that game by a 47-33 margin.

Possible Starters Agler is as yet undetermined as to a starting lineup for Friday night's contest at Monmouth, saying "we’re going to let a lot of boys play the first couple of games before picking a lineup.” He says though that Bollenbacher will definitely be a starter, possibly teaming with Meshberger and Bixler at forward, with Gary Dailey, a 5-9, 130-pound sophomore. and Cary Hanni, a 5-10, 150 pound senior, in the backcourt. Agler has seven seniors currently listed on his 12-player varsity joster, but is quick to add this they could change if the Cardinals aren't winning ball games. ‘‘We can lose as easy with the young ones, as the seniors,” the veteran mentor exclaimed. Since many of the tougher opponents are on the latter part of the schedule, such as Ossian. Montpelier, Adams Central, to name a few, Agler might quickly go to the underclassmen in hopes of being prepared come the first of the year. He says, however, that one trouble is that most of the young players are small. Tbe one hope for growing past six feet is soph Ed Ziegler, who is now 5-10 and weighs 150 pounds. Loses Player If Agler wasn’t having enough trouble what with the lack of experienced returnees, he lost a good “hopeful" when junior Rod Mosser broke his leg in football. He appears he'll be out at least until January, and possibly for the entire season. With the tougher portion of the schedule later in the season, and a crew of players that need experience, Agler Is pointing toward the sectional “I think we’ll get tougher as the year goes along,” he stated.
