whic hit is made. Wood chips, until the invention of hardboard, a waste product, are reduced to fibers; the fibers are then refined and compressed into dense, rigid panels in heated hydraulic presses. The fibers are bonded together with lignin, the orginal wood’s natural bonding agent. The result product is stronger than the wood it’s made from! But unlike wood, hardboard possesses equal strength in all surface directions. It has no grain to mar the surface or finished application; nor will it split, splinter or crack. Thus, superior wearing and working qualities are now wedded to a wide variety of available forms and finishes to make hardboard the irresistible medium for interior design. And hardboard is practical for exterior use as well. Now accepted as a superior siding material by the construction industry, hardboard has many other uses — decorative and utilitarian — outside the home. With the coming of spring, family living turns to the out-of-doors. Thoughts of green lawns, budding flower beds and patio barbecues are a part of this spring fever. Hardboard can play an important, even colorful role in furthering those springtime and summer occupations. That patio can have living room privacy combined with outdoor airiness and light — all through the judicious use of fencing. And what better material for fencing than hardboard? Here tempered hardboard, specially treated at the factory to make it harder, tougher, fills the bill unusually well. Tempered hardboard resists the wear of ever-changing weather. For fencing hardboard can be applied to posts in large panels — rectangular, square, oval or diamond - shaped — and painted in bright decorator colors. Performated panels can be used with appropriate fixtures, to hang potted plants after a winter indoors. Hardboard Patio Uses Because of its pliability, hardboard fencing is not restricted to just panel applications, Hardboard can be woven into striking backet-weave fences. Both horizontal and vertical effects are popular. Hardboard fence designs can be as varied as the purposes for which they are built. The sun will feel warmer, for example, if the fence screens the wind. A splat fence is much more efficient in protecting against the wind then an solid fence. But if a solid fence is desired for privacy’s sake, then a slanting baffle on top of the fence will add to efficient wind protection. And if protection from the sun is desired, a patio room may be the answer. Such a roof can be a worthwhile do-it-yourself project, requiring only a week-end of the home handyman’s time. A roof, built of four-by-eight
PAINT BRUSHING TTPS Your paint job can be significantly improved by using proper brushing techniques, says National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association. Here are some rules to follow. Keep an even pressure on the brush, using long sweeping arm strokes. Use both sides of each brushful and end each stroke with a light, lifting motion. Try to work across, as much as possible, to avoid lap marks in the paint. Always apply paint to an unpainted area and work into the wet edge of the previously painted portion.
foot modular panels caa be installled next to any wall, or even beside the garage. As the American Hardboard Association suggests, the roof can be built for easy dismantling come winter — when sunshine is more welcome and more easily endured. Directions for building such a roof can be obtained by writing the association. Inside and out, from basement to attic, hardboard has proved its versatility and practicality. Now, about that attic. Convert it into something other than storage apace for the things you don’t want or don’lneed, Make it into a guest room, study, or astronomical observatory if you will. But whatever its destined use, hardboard will play an economical, practical part in its conversion. First off, to make that interior easier cm the eyes, hardboard paneling is easily cut and applied to those eyesore beams. Choose a wood - grained finish, colored paneling, or the kind you paint yourself. Your choice will be determined by the new room’s intended use and by your own taste. Whatever those may be, there’s a hardboard variety to meet your specifications. Once the wall paneling is in, further hardboard uses may be devised to fit the room’s functional purpose. Conversion to a student’s room may call for providing a permanent work table — made of plastic finished hardboard, naturally. Room for storage can be provided and underneath, off by scuff-resistant sliding hardboard doors. Hardboard With Holes Perforated hardboard is a nat-
