Hockemeyer and Jerry Sa a L frank, and another soph, Gary Schane, also performed admirably. Grab Lead Don Elder’s Eagles, who definitely lack scoring punch, especially from the outside, came out battling and built up a 0-0 lead before Schane got the ’Cats on the board at the 4:02 mark with a charity toss. Steve Hakes and Mike Luginbill added two tallies apiece for a 10-2 Eagle lead, before Ron Saalfrank connected on a Jump shot for the first Hoagland fielder at the 2:44 mark of the initial stanza. The Eagles continued to scrap and boosted their margin to 17-6, before Ron Saalfrand scored twice twice from the field and Stan Zelt another soph, added a free throw," all in the final minute of the period, to cut the margin to 17-11 after one quarter. First Eight The Hoaglanders began hitting in the second stanza, scored the first eight points, and took a Ift--17 lead with two and a half minutes gone. A long one-hander by Danny Conrad knotted the score for the final time, as Heckler and Dave Mulligan tossed in twopointers to put their quintet on top, 23-19. The ’Cats expanded that lead to six points, 29-23, at the main Intermission. v Ron Saalfrank’s three-point play just seven seconds into the third quarter lifted the lead to 3223. A basket by Ron Saalfrank gave Hoagland a 44-31 lead entering the final eight minutes of play. The Eagles got 17 points in the opening period, yet it was a minute and 11 seconds into the final Quarter before they could double that total, as Mike Luginbill’s iiwo shot cut Hoagland’s lead to' 49-35. With five minutes to play, Max Fuellilng of the Eagles found the range and pumped in four straight from the field and added a free throw, cutting the Eagles deficit to 56-46 with 2:37 to play. Schane scored on a drive, after Heckler and Lugiribill traded free throws, and then Schane uncorked a floor-length pass to Zelt who went under for the score. The bucket gave the 'Cats a 62-46 lead with 1:52 on . the scoreboard and assured them of their third victory in a row. Two Tops Fuelling and Conrad paced the Eagles scoring with 13 tallies apiece. Twenty personals were whistled on Monmouth and 16 on Hoagland, but the ’Cats lost Jerrv Saalfrank and Mulligan in the final three minutes of play. Mulligan was outstanding on defense, blocking numerous shots, including about seven or eight on Conrad, the top Eagle scorer. Monmouth hit 14 of 19 at the charity stripe, and Hoagland 14 of 22. Hoagland will have a tough time retaining its perfect record next when they meet Bishon Luers. Hie Eagles open their home season Friday, entertaining the Geneva Cardinals.
