Tht Third Party Recent analysis of local political trends reveals that Adams county is in no immediate danger of going dry. A careful precinct-by-princinct review of last week’s Adams county election returns reveals that E. Harold Munn, the Prohibition party’s presidential prospect, received only 106 votes, trailing President Lyndon B. Johnson by 6531 votes. He made a slightly better showing against Senator Barry Goldwater, who led him by only 4124 votes. Accompanying Hass in defeat was his vice-presi-dential candidate, Mark R. Shaw. Munn made his biggest gains in the North Monroe and Beme-A polling places, picking up eight non-in-toxicating tallies in each. But his most disappointing showing was in the city of Berne, where he picked up only 26 votes in four polling places, despite the fact that the community has, on occasion, turned out nearly a thousand vociferous protestors to voice their disapproval of demon rum at local liquor license hearings. Perhaps the not-so-dry memories of the prohibition era contributed to the party’s poor showing in the 1964 coyest, but it seems likely that Munn’s lowkey campaign was the primary reason for the poor showing. And this, in turn, is probably due to a low ebb in party finances. Prohibitionist posters, rallies, ads and TV appearances (all expensive) were, as usual, conspicuous by their absence in the campaign. Perhaps the party missed a. low-budget bet in not exhuming some of the literature, posters, buttons and slogans from the Great Campaign which preceded the passing of the Prohibition Amendment to the Constitution. At any rate, Adams county’s tavern owners seemed to worry little, if at all, about the threat of a Prohibitionist landslide. Editorial written by Mike Theole
