A Salute to Youth This is the week traditionally set aside by the Optimist Clubs of AmericA to pay tribute to the many accomplishments of young people. As human beings we have a tendency to categorize, and as it is always easier to see faults than to see virtues, we frequently criticize all young people for the thoughtless acts of a few, just as we frequently will criticize an entire race or religion for faults of member individuals. But ho one can observe the tremendous strides being made by young people today without admiring them. Take for example this past election. , Literally hundreds of young people of both political parties pitched in, developed strong interests in politics, and worked very hard to elect their even though many were four or five years or more from voting I The high spirits of youth to try everything, omit nothing, their zesty approach to life is the envy of all adults. It was Mark Twain, I believe, who said that youth is such a wonderful thing that it’s a pity to waste it on children 1 Since this is an age of intelligence, the youth person who combines good health, physical ability and brains is the envy of his classmates. The era when a big, dumb football player, who had to be pointed down the field, can be the hero of every girl is long gone, and today’s grid stars must have some gray matter as well as muscles. Athletic prowess is soon forgotton, and a man’s ability to earn a living in competition with his fellow workers take precedent. And so today more and more high school students are turning to post-graduate education. About 50% of Decatur’s graduates continue their education, and now with an lU-Purdue combined campus in Fort i Wayne, college education will soon be within the easy reach of all willing to work to get it. So today we salute the thinking youth, who plans ahead to make a secure living for his wife and family, and provide them with the finer things -of life that an education and culture allows. More young people today are reading, and finding out what the world is really like than ever before. These are the people who will be making tomorrow’s decisions. We salute you, young people of Adams and neighboring counties — continue to grow and learn, and you will share greatly in your country’s prosperity and happiness I editorial written Dy — Dick Heller
