freshments will be served following the meeting. As an added feature, open house will be observed, with parents and friends of students invited to visit the classrooms. The Monroe Better Homes demonstration club will meet at 7:30 o'clock this evening at the home of Mrs. Edward Pierce. An auction will also be held. GROCERY SHOWER SURPRISES MRS. BEER A surprise grocery shower was given for Mrs. Ed Beer by Miss Diana Hirschy and Miss Edith Dennison at ‘the home of Mrs. Claud Dennison Saturday evening, Games Were played, with the winners presenting the prizes to the honored guest. Mrs. Beer then opened her many useful gifts followed by refreshments of pumpkin pie, mints and nuts, and coffee or hot chocolate being served by the hostesses. Those attending were the Misses Miriam Yager, Beverly Osterman, Eva Miller, Judy Beer, Nancy Beer, Diane Dennison, Arlene Dennison, Sandra Teeter, Kathy Hirschy, Angie Lehman, Jane Kaehr, and the Mesdames Lynn Lehman, Melvin Hirschy, Carl Hirschy, Roland Beer. JUDITH SMITH MARRIED FRIDAY Miss Judith Kay Smith, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Smith, 935 Mercer avenue, and James L. Lawrence, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lawrence, Arcola, were united in marriage at the Trinity EUB church at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Fuhrman Miller officiated the double ring, candlelight ceremony decorated with autumn colors of mums. Organist was Mrs. Larry Affolder, who played the traditiont al music. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a loop mohair bronze street .length two piece suit. Her headdress was composed of a dark brown veil caught to a velvet bow on her head. She wore a corsage of yellow mums and a bronze bow. Her maid of honor was Miss Joy E. Sumas, Fort Wayne. She chose a two piece beige suit with a darker beige veil and. bow and a,. .yellow, mum corsage with broiige ties. Larry Stahlhut, Fort Wayne, was best man, with Bruce Swihart, Arcola, and Bob Smith, Hoagland, seating the guests. Mrs. Smith wore a turquoise blue dress with black accessories. Mrs. Lawrence wore a cranberry dress with black accessories. Her fiance is a graduate of Decatur high school and is employed by Zollner Corporation, Fort Wayne. A summer wedding is being planned.

She is presently working at St. Joseph’s hospital. Hie groom, a graduate of Arcola high school, is employed at the American Hoist and Derrick Co. The couple will be at home on route 7, Columbia City, following their honeymoon. WOMEN’S GUILD MEETS RECENTLY The Women’s Guild of the Zion United Church of Christ met recently for their regular monthly meeting. Mrs. Thomas Adler was the program chairman. She report®! on the summer retreat held in Indianapolis in June. Mrs. Adler also gave the devotions with scriptures read by Mrs. Bernard Meyer, Mrs. James Borders, Mns. LaVerne Roth and Miss Lucille • Beavers. A trombone solo was presented by Paul Ehrsam. He was acompanied by Verna Adler. Hie business meeting was conducted by the president, Mrs. Lawrence Rash. The circles reported 94 sick calls and 60 social calls. The meeting was closed with the Mizpah benediction. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Robert Lord, Mrs. Simon Lehrman, Mrs. Richard Linn, Mrs. Sol Lord, Mrs. S. E. Leonardson, Mrs. Jack Liby and Mrs. Fred Liniger. FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CIRCLES TO MEET The circles of the First Presbyterian church will meet this week. . Wednesday morning the Naomi circle will meet at the church at a.m. with the chairman, Mj-s. John McConaha, presiding. Mrs. David Macklin will lead the Bible Study. -Hostesses will be Mrs.James Moses and Mrs. Richard Green. Hie Ruth cricle will meet With Mrs. Charles Morgan, chairman, at the home of Mrs. W. E. Petrie, at' 8 p.m., Wednesday. Miss Eleanor Pumphrey will assist the hostess. The Mary-Martha circle will meet Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. J. F. Sanmann. Assistant hostesses are Mrs. Dale Moses, Mrs. Frank Alton, Mrs. Woodson Ogg and Mrs. Grace Alwein. The Bible study will be led by Mrs. M. A. Frisinger. The program about Pakistan will be given by Mrs. Milo Black at all three circle meetings. I. H. C. A. TO ENTER STATE CONVENTION Tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Severin Hotel in Indianapolis at the state hairdressers convention, the Decatur affiliate of I. H. C. A. is competing with approximately 35 other affiliates throughout the state, with their entry in the parade of affiliates. The Decatur affiliate’s entry will be the state bird of Indiana, the Cardinal. The committee for this project was Mrs. Leland Bienz, chairman, Mrs. Leo Teeple, and Mrs. Bob Hoffman. Other members also helped. The rules for entry were that the theme must pertain to something in the state of Indiana, a composition of 250 words or less describing the chosen theme and a song. The Decatur affiliate designed the Costume which must be built upon an affiliate member. Mrs. Leland Bienz of Decatur is the model of the basis for the cardinal and Mrs. Ronald Kessler, of Monroe, the hair stylist. The costume of the cardinal is ' composed of approximately 6,000 feathers with ‘the wings expanded from 30 to 19 inches and the tail from 44 to 26 inches. The enrty will be judged upon compositions, 50%; presentation 25%; and costume, 25%. Teeple Truck Lines and Johnson’s Studio from Decatur, and Adams County Farm Bureau Lumber Co. of Monroe will be representing the affiliate’s entry. The state winner will have the honor of going to the 1965 national hairdressers and cosmetologists convention at St. Louis. To Stand Trial On Check Forgery Charge Glen Dague, 33-year-old resident of route 6, Decatur, was returned to this city Monday afternoon from Norman Beatty hospital to stand trial cm charges of check forgery. Deputy sheriff Harold August picked up Dague Monday afternoon when the local man was discharged from the hospital. Dague was arrested on the charge in December of 1963, but the Adams circuit court ordered him to Beatty hospital. He will now stand trial on the charges, however. -<3*

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shively became the parents of a baby boy, Anthony Todd, October 30 at the Clinic hospital in Bluffton. Shively, who resides on a Bluffton rural route, is the local field representative of the Eastern Indiana Production Credit Association. Only 25 Jobless Pov Claims Here Five new unemployment claims, and 20 continued claims, gave Adams county a total of 25 for the week ending last Saturday, Richard P. App, manager of the Fort Wayne office, reported today. Unemployment compensation claims cover one-half of the county’s 9,500 workers, indicating that well under one per cent of the county’s workers are presently unemployed, "Die rate of unemployment has been dwindling since the 1960 recession.

On t( Who’s Who” List Miss Msrilou Holthouse Among the students in the 1964-65 publication of ‘‘Who’s Who” in the Colleges and Universities of America is Marilou Holthouse, a senior at the College of St. Francis, Joliet, 111. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis A. (Jack) Holthouse, route 5. The students are elected on the basis of outstanding effort and achievement during their college years. Miss Holthouse is a graduate of Decatur Catholic high school. This year she is vice president of the student government. Her major field is sociology.
