Schnepp's Three - Point Play Gives Jets 62 - 61 Squeaker Over Lions

By Bob Shraluka Adams Central’s Flying Jets opened their new season on their hardwood the way they had concluded the previous one on the same floor — with fans pouring out of the bleachers to celebrate a victory. Junior center Roger Schnepp converted a three-point play with 15 seconds remaining in the contest to pull the Jets from two points in arrears to a 62-61 victory over the Lions of Leo In a real thriller. If the contest was any indication as to the games in store in this new 1964-65 season, Adams County basketball fans have plenty of thrilling moments ahead. The defending sectional champions poured the ball through the hoop from all angles in the first half, especially the initial period,, to open up leads of 12, 14 and 16 points, but nearly frittered the game away in the final period. Leo, coached by former Monmouth player and Pleasant Mills Coach Arnie Getting, came battling back in the second half and with 1:52 in the game, held a commanding four-point lead. Schnepp's late heroics, however, got the Jets away winging in search of a duplication — or improvement on — last season’s fine 16-4 record. Lions Rally Leo rallied to close to within two points <in several occasions in the third period, after trailing 3624 at halftime, and then moved into ties at 39 and 40. The score was tied 44-44 with 24 seconds left in the third stanza, when Schnepp drove down the lane and scored, and added a free throw when fouled, to send Vernon Zurcher’s crew into a 47-44 margin entering the final period. Art Ringger tossed in a pair of charity tosses with just one second gone in the last period, and Dave Fishbaugh and Tony Ehrsam of Adams Central traded two points from the foul line. The team continued to trade free toss"s, with the Jets’ lead see-saw-ing from three points to one. •With 3:27 -to play, Fishbaugh banked in a jump shot and I«o had its first lead since the early moments of the game. 56-55. Boost Margin Steve Minnich missed a free throw and the Lions came roaring down the floor, with Jei-ry Smith firing in a two-pointer, "tjoostlng their lead to SS-55. Fishbaugh came back moments later to throw in another free shot, and the Lions led, 59-55, with just over two minutes to play. They got the ball back again, but Smith was called for charging Schnepp. Lanky Rog missed the shot but grabbed the rebound and put it back in, cutting the Lion lead to 59-57. It was the first Adams Central field goal of the period. The Jets got the ball back oh a Leo violation, and Tony Ehrsam dumped in his favorite jump shot from the side of the free throw circle, with a minute and 12 seconds to play. Smith, however,, worked his way loose underneath and scored, giving his team the lead again, 61-59, with a minute to play. The Lions got possession of the ball again and with 32 seconds left, Gehrig was fouled. He missed the free throw, Schnepp rebounded and called for a timeout. The Jets put the ball in play with 26 seconds left, trailing by two points. Ten seconds later Schnepp whirled off the pivot and went undernearth to score between a mass of arms, tying the score. Gehrig committed his fifth foul on the play and Schnepp calmly stepped to the line, dropped the charity toss through, giving his team the final 62-61 margin.

Leo got two shots off in the ‘closing minutes, the last one with four seconds remaining, but missed both. The final shot went off to the side as the horn sounded — and once again Adams \Ccntral fans poured onto the floor to mob their players. Great Shooting Through some great shooting, the Monroe boys tossed in nine field goals in the opening period and to a 22-10 lead after the first eight minutes. Art Ringger pumped in four long jump shots in fou¥ attempts, and Schnepp added tallies in the period. The Lions, shooting terribly from the field ln\the first quar- ‘ ter, picked up in second, while the Jets cooled off, and each quintet tallied 14 points in the second eight minutes of play, as the Jets maintained their 12point lead, 36-24. Tops Scorers Schnepp topped all scorers Mth‘ 21 tallies, and Ehrsam and Ringger chipped in with 13 and 12 respectively. Gehrig, Fishbaugh and 6-4 junior center Dick Minnick scored 16 apiece to lead the LiOM. Fishbaugh’s 16 came in the second half. After whistling five personals per team in the first half, the officials begain calling them close in the second half and blew 10

more on Adams Central and 15 more on Leo. Gehrig was the only player to foul out. The Lions were outstanding from the 15-foot stripe, converting 17 of 20 chances, while the Jets hit on 16 of 25 The Lions won the preliminary, also a thriller, by a 57-55 margin in the final seconds. Adams Central is idle until November 20. when they host Lancaster Central. Luers Edges Bulldogs By 14-7 In Finale Bishop Luers marched to a third period touchdown and nosed out New Haven by a 14-7 score in the final game of the grid season for both teams. Bob Rohrbacher scored from 15 yards out to put the Bulldogs into a 7-0 first periods lead, but Luers tied the score in the second period and went on to win in the third stanza. New Haven fininshed at 5-2-1, while Luers concluded with a 7-3 mark.

Hoagland Downs Cubs

The Hoagland Wildcats chalked up their second victory in two starts in the new season Friday night, downing the Monroeville Cubs on the strength of a big third quarter. ■*" Monroeville held a one-point, 5-4 lead, after a low scoring first period, but the 'Cats came back in the second stanga to build up a 15-13 halftime lead. It was in the third quarter that the Hoagland quintet iced the verdict, as they outscored the Cubs 23-12 in the period for a 3825 advantage entering the final eight minutes, when each dub scored 16 points. The defeat spoiled the debut of new Cub coach Lee DeTurk, who replaced Loren Grabner. Dave Mulligan and Gary Schane paced the winners in scoring with 14 tallies apiece, and Ron Saalfrank added 10. Big Galen McIntosh carried the Cub offensive burden with 17 markers. |»

Ossian Blasts Monmouth 95-43

A rebuilding Monmouth team ran into a talented and veteran steamroller at Ossian Friday night and were beaten by 52 points, 9543 as both clubs opened their 1964-65 seasons. The Eagles, with Just one regular and only ■'three lettermen returning from last year, were never in the game as the ex-perience-laden Baars gave indications of living up to their reputation as being one of the area’s finest quintets this season. Using a fast break to perfection, anß controlling both backboards, Ossian jumped into an early lead and built their margin to 22-7 after one period. They tossed in 28 more points in the second quarter to the Eagles’ 11, and took a 50-18 advantage to the dressing room at halftime. Play Even The Eagles played the Bears on even terms in the third stanza,

each club scoring 11 points, but Ossian rolled for 34 tallies in the last period to run up a big score. Five Bears scored in double figures, with' Elzey’s 31 -tallies leading the way. Coach Art Windmiller's son scored 18, while Young and Co’ton added 12 each and Springer chipped in with IlDanny Conrad, the lone veteran back from last year, scored three-fourths of Monmouth’s 12 field goals and more than half of their points, tallying 23 of his team’s 43.
