Warm and Dry Decatur ia having another warm, dry fall, similar last year's autumn months. Last year some of the chrysanthemums lasted until the first of December, and It appears that they may do that well again this year. But we could certainly use some rain. For the past 2Vi years the entire midwest — not only Adams county — has been “shorted” on its moisture. We wouldn’t really need to be short. We had received more than enough water during the previous ten years. But, unfortunately, we had no retaining dams to store up the water, and provide a reservior, plus plenty for recreation and summerwinter fun. So, we have no reservdfr of water to carry us now that we have had a dry spell. Crops suffer, yards dry up, etc. It may not be the the same teneyears from now. Starting in 1958, with the election of Sen. Hartke, Indiana has been far more conscious of the possibilities of building dams to provide reservoirs and lakes. Several are already completed, and more of them are started. With the great rivers we have in Indiana, there _ is no excuse for a lack of park sites, cottage sites, and boating places. Even in Mexico new dams are being rapidly completed to provide water skiing and other recreation for the Mexican people and tourists. We here in Adams county cannot afford to ?it quietly by, and allow other areas of the country to get ahead of us. We pay our share of Federal taxea, and deserve to have facilities here of the type being constructed in other areas with Federal tax money. But it is up to our intelligent leadership to plan and provide this for us. If our present leadership is not interested, then we will have to keep agitating, and hope that the leaders of the future will be more interested. Editorial written by Dick Heller
