Over In Van Wert The Van Wert Times-Bulletin Friday carried a five-column headline, "Sidewalk Bike Riding Needs Stiff Sentence; Bikes To Be Impounded.” ; The story read in part: “Subdued whispers of “the kids think It’s a lark” and “who do they think they are, anyway?” in addition to amused smiles disappeared quickly from PARENTS’ faces Thursday in juvenile traffic court as Judge Kaythryn L. Harrington ordered 29 bicycles impounded by the city police department for 30 days and the owners to pay court costs of $7.50 each for violating the city's bicycle ordinance. Court costs must bo paid out of the youngsters* earnings.” The arrests were for violating sections of the ordinance which set aside prohibited areas, such as congested downstown areas, as prohibited areas for riding bicycles. One was for running a stop light. Decatur is handling its bicycle problem differently. Instead of passing the bicycle ordinance, and instructing the police to enforce it, the Decatur city council has done nothing, and the chief of police, instead, is making a personal campaign . to convince all of the city’s youthful bicycle riders that they should obey sensible rules. The city police are making no organized effort to enforce state ordinances concerning bicycles, nor have they been encouraged to do so by any city officiate, so far as the public knows. Last week a lady, obviously shaken up, brought a society item into the Democrat office, and mentioned she had just been knocked down by a bicycle on Second street. This isn’t unusual. You can see it every week uptown. It’s dangerous, unnecessary, and brutal treatment of those who cannot get out of the way of vehicles. Editorial written by Dick Heller
