Foes Work For Colts
By MARTIN LATER UPI Sports Writer The Baltimore Colts have turned the Western Division of the National Football League so topsy-turvy that they’ll even have their closest rivals out working for them this weekend. That’s quite a trick in the cold, brutal world of professional football, but not nearly as mystifying as the Colts themselves, who seem headed for their first divisional title since 1959. Baltimore has won six consecutive games since an opening loss and is favored by 17 points to whip the San Francisco Forty-Niners at home Sunday and set a club record for consecutive wins. Rickey Gives His Views Os Card Shakeup By WILLIAM GREEN United Press International ST. LOUIS (UPl)—The St. Louis Cardinals became world champions in 1964 because “there* was serious internal trouble on the club, and it was cleaned up,” Branch Rickey said Thursday. The 83-year-old Rickey, who organized the first baseball farm system, resigned last, week as 'Cardinal consultant. I His resignation became the last in a string of front-office shakeups, beginning with the firing of General Manager Bing Devine in August. , ■ Propped back in a blue suit, with a blue-and-red striped tie, Rickey tapped a cane on the I floor and said Devine was fired for “petty reasons.” “I would not have fired DeI vine,” he said. Cardinal owner August A. Busch, Jr., “issued two statements saying I didn’t have anything to do with it, and that’s the truth”. ; Busch “called me into his office when the Cardinals were slumping,” he said. “He was unhappy with (John) Keane and had a manager pending. He asked me to recommend a manager, and I said Bob Howsam.” Howsam, an ex-minor league organizer and club owner from Denver, took Devine’s place. The juggling continued with Business Manager Art Routzong being released. The shocker came when Manager Johnny Keane piloted the Cardinals to the world championship and then snubbed a new higherpaying contract. Rickey said, "You know Keane said he resigned for a lot of little reasons. But some of them weren’t so little.” Keane went to the Yankees, and Coach Red Schoendienst was promoted to Keane’s spot. “I’m a Keane man,” Rickey said.

The Colts have scored 237 points this season, far more than any other NFL team, and have been just as strong on defense where they are a close second in fewest points yielded with 122. While Baltimore goes through its paces with the Forty-Niners, the Detroit Lions will be hosting the Los Angeles Rams. Whatever happens here will work to Baltimore’s advantage since the Lions and Rams are tied for second place with identical records of 4-2-1. The Colts routed Detroit 34-t> last week while Los Angeles upset the Green Bay Packers 27-17. Detroit is favored by three points in this second meeting between the two clubs. They played to a 17-17 tie at Los Angeles early' this season. The pairings also favor the Eastern -Division leader as the Cleveland Browns are picked by seven points over the Steelers at Pittsburgh while the runnerup St. Louis Cardinals must face the long-dormant Giants at New York. . 'j a Even though St. Louis is favored by five the Giants showed definite signs of snapping their disastrous slump when they outgained Cleveland in all offensive departments last week although losing 42-20. The Cardinals * will be playing without veteran split end Sonny Randle, out for the season with a shoulder separation. He will be replaced by second-year
Top-Ranked St. Joe Whins Roosevelt SOUTH BEND, Ind. (UPD— South Bend St. Joseph’s, which got a vote of confidence as the state’s No. 1 team despite a tie last week, lived up to it with a 28-7 victory over prawtously unbeaten East Chicago .Roosevelt in Thursday night’s Indiana high school football “game of the week.” Despite the tie with South Bend Washington, the Saints remained in first place this week in the ratings by the UPI board of coaches. St. Joseph’s, scoring in every period, ripped through Roosevelt’s touted defense to the tune of 22 firtt downs and 265 yards rushing. Sixth-ranked Roosevelt, which had the ball for only 10 plays from scrimmage in the first half, wound up with six first downs and 99 rushing yards. Quarterback Dave Smith led the St. Joseph’s attack with a pair of touchdowns, both on plunges of one yard or less. In another big game on Thursday’s slim schedule, Gary Roosevelt handed Gary Wallace its first loss of the season, 25-6. Led by Walter Williams with two touchdowns, Roosevelt built up a 25-0 lead before Wallace could score. It was Roosevelt’s third victory against four losses and one tie. Wallace, which already has clinched a share of the Northwest Conference championship, has a 6-1-1 record.
man Billy Gambrell. Browns To Revenge Loss The Steelers handed the Browns their only loss of the campaign by a 23-7 count at Cleveland three weeks ago but Pittsburgh has only a 3-4 mark this season and was beaten by Philadelphia 34-10 last Sunday. It should be a big day for Jimmy Brown of Cleveland, who needs only 14 more yards rushing to become the first player in league history to gain 10,000. ' In other games, Green Bay is favored by four points over the Vikings at Minnesota, the Chi,.cago Bears are picked by six at home against the Dallas Cowboys and the Eagles are a four-point choice over the Washington Redskins at Philadelphia. ■ ' ' Bullets Nip Lakers With Late Splurge 2 By United Press International Hie Baltimore Bullets, coming back in the final minutes of a hectic National Basketball Association game, defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 98-95 in the only NBA contest on tap Thursday night. Walt Bellamy and Bailey J Howell provided a crowd of 6,631 fans the excitement they came to see by connecting on successive shots to pull the bullets into the lead with only six minutes to play. It was the Lakers’ first loss after three straight wins and left theifl with a 4-2 NBA record, still best in the Western Division. Gus Johnson, with 16 points in the first half, led the Burets with 28 points and also did a great job rebounding. West, thanks to his fine third quarter, also scored 28 — one "’more than Laker teammate Elgin Baylor who had 27. * Bellamy followed Johnson in the Baltimore scoring total with 19. Howell finished with 11, including six key points in the final period.
