Jackets Seeking Fifth Win Tonight
Meet Elmhurst In NEIC Affair At South Side Stadium At 8 P.M.
Outer Terry Smitley and quarterback Daye Anspaugh will be in tonight's starting lineup despite injuries suffered in last week’s fame al Bluffton. Sinitley received a broken nose and bad some teeth loosened In 'he fame, while Anspaugh twisted his left ankle. Both will be ready for tonight’s contest, however. Decatur’s Yellow Jackets may find they have a "tiger by the tail" when they meet the Troians of Elmhurst at Fort Wayne's South Side stadium tonight. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 8 o'clock. A recent check of statistics covering Decatur's first five games, of which they have won four, give indication, however, that Elmhurst may be holding the Tiger by the tail. The Yellow Jackets, with their offensive attack finally coming to life in the past two games, are averaging total yardage amounting to 300 yards per contest m their first five games. With their best rushing night of the season last week .igjiiet Bluffton. 335 yards, the D?''iit,ir eleven has an average of 238 yards gained per game on the ground and 62 in the air, for a total average of 300 yards per contest. Back Averages "What is more amazing is some of the yards-per-carry averages of that Fabulous Four backfield Max Elliott, the all-state senior halfba'ck, has picked up 432 yards rushing in just 49 carries, for an average of 8.8 yards gained each time he lugs* the leather. The Blythe brothers, who arc keeping the defenses from keying on Elliott, have equally impressive statistics. Sam has picked up 324 yards via the ground in 50 carries, for an average of 6 5, while Bill's average is a neat 77 yards a try, with 301 yards gained in 39 carries. In addition, Dave Anspaugh Las a net gain of 94 yards in 31 carries. And those carries include losses while passing, which Browns Favored Sunday In NFL By United Press International The Cleveland Browns are heavily favored to make Pittsburgh their fourth victim night but Buddy Parker, coach of the scrappy Steelers, isn't' conceding a thing. "Any club that gets itself up can beat any other club iu this league, and this holds for my team,” Parker declared. "All we need are a few breaks." The Browns, favored by two touchdowns, already have beaten Washington, Philadelphia and Dallas and have played to a 33-33 tie with the St. Louis Cardinals who also are unbeaten. Cleveland and St. Louis, each with a record of 3-0-1, share first place in the Eastern Division of the National Football League. The Browns are given a better chance of "surviving" the weekend than the Cards who face the niggl'd Baltimore Colts, the Western Division leaders, in a Columbus Day game at Baltimore Monday night. The five other NFL games this weekend will be played Sunday and several teams, particula ly New York. Dallas, Chicago and Green Bay, arc struggling to stay In contention. The Giants (3-I', the fading Eastern Division champions, plav the slow-starting Cbw’boys (1-31 at Dallas; the reeling Washington Redskins CO-4' entertain the Philadelphia Eagles (2-2); the unlucky Packers (22) go against the San Francisco Forty-Niners J 2-2) at Milwaukee; the Minnesota Vikings (22) host the Detroit Lions (2-1-1 ’ and the faltering Bears (1-3', the defending champions in the West, open their home season against the surprising Los Angeles Rams (2-1-1).

means his actual rushing yardage Is nearly twice the net gain figure. Anspaugh has completed 17 of 34 passes, a good 50 per cent accuracy figure, good for 305 yards in five contests. Bill Brown completed one pass against Bluffton for four yards. Senior end Dave Smith hnj been the top receiver, snaring five tosses for 149 total yard;;. Elliott has made four receptions good for 108 yards. Defense Strong While the offense has scored 66 points in the past two ,lames, the defensive unit continues to sparkle. Opponents have scored just 43 points in five games against the Yellow Jackets, about 8% points per game, and this includes the two TD's New Haven scored against second-stringers in the final minute of play, and the one Bluffton got last week against substitutes with less than a minute left in the gamd. In addition, the defense has allowed opposing teams less than 200 total yards on the average for five contests. Opponents have gained 171 yards rushing and hist 36 passing per game. Th'* first five foes have completed 15 passes in 34 attempts against the Yellow Jacket defense. Line Outweighed These figures will more than likely not impress Elmhurst, however, which has its best football team since the school began the sport several years ago. The Trojans arc smarting from two losses and a tie in the last three games, after a pair of victories to open their season. As has been the case all year, Decatur will give up a weight advantage to their opposition Saturday night. Elmhurst ha;: n big offensive line that averages 18(! pounds per, man The Yellow Jacket offensive line •hverages just under 180 pounds apiece. The Trojan ends weigh 190 pounds each, and the tackle; tip the scales nt 182 and 195 pound. . Zcysing, the biggest of the starters, weighs 200 pqunds, and his partner at guard. Porter, comer, in nt 180 pounds. Wolfe,. the starting center, is a 165-pounder. Dave Schwartz is a 210-pound reserve center. Backs Big Tlie Troian backfield isn’t small either. Big Ted Barker, the Northeastern Indiana Conference’s leading scorer with 45 points in four games, is a 6-1, ,190-pound-icrer. Jackson and Kellv, the halfbacks, weigh in nt 170 and 145 respectively, and Hetrick, the quarterback, tip the scales at 160 pounds. The Troians will run out o' a T formation, and will use an unbalanced line on defense. Barker, of course, is thdr bl" pun, Last week, against Bishop Liters, he carried the ball 21 times md gained four yards ner trv. The whole (cam gained just 135 vards on the ground, nnd completed four of onlv eight passes. Tlie Troians, winless last season, won their first two .games this year, besting Garrett. 19-11 nnd Angola, 13-0. in a pni" of NETC games. Thev then battled Concordia to a 19-19 tie before being upset bv Columbia Citv. 38-20. Last Fridav, Elmhurst was whipped bv Liters. 20-6. Their offense has been strong, but the defense bns been the team’s weakness. With Decatur',-: attack now rolling this could be the difference tonight. This means, however, that the club isn t much more than halfway to "s goal of 200 members for this year, Reidenbach added. Memberships are priced at $5, but a membership entitle# the holder to attend both the football and D-Club banquets free of charge. With slightly more than 180 members last year, the Booster Club hopes to reach or surpass the 200 mark for this year. Try To Contact "We have tried to contact all past members and also to see pros|>ective new members," Reldenbaeh added, "but this is hard to do. Reidenbach urged all former members who wish to renew their membership, or anyone that is interested in joining the organization, to contact him or one of the other officers. The membership drive will continue for a few weeks yet, at least until the football banquet. Tin' football banquet is the annual affair put on each year by the club to honor the Decatur high school fixitball team, and is r.p’en only to members of the organization. Arrangements are now being made to bring a member of the Chicago Bear coaching staff to Decatur as the featured speaker forth e banquet. Further announcements concerning this will be made in the near future. Contact Officers Other officers of the club are Dick Linn vice president; Herb Banning, Jr., secretary; Dave Wynn, treasurer; Gerald Strickler, John Isch, Bob Shraluka, nnd Fred Isch. directors. Linn is also head of the membership drive, and anyone interested in becoming a member may contact any of the officers listed above. Staubach-Less Navy Is Whipped By Tech By FRED McMANE UPI Sports Writer When Navy Coach Wayne Ha. din said before the season began that without Roger Staubach the Middles wouldn't rank among the nation's top 20 football teams, he apparently was not kidding one little bit. Friday night, Hardin's "pre--season pessimism" became a reality as the once-proud Midshipmen. minus star quarterback Roger Staubach, dropped their second straight game, losing to Georgia Tech, 17-0. Staubach was forced to the sidelines with an ankle injury and the Middies couldn't move without him. Yellowjacket quarterback Bruce Fisher led Tech to tiwo touchdowns and a field goal in the first 19 minutes and that was enough to sink the Middies. California got a key touchdown pass from its star quarterback Craig Morton to defeat a stubborn Miami team, 9-7. in the only other major college game played Friday night. Jailed On Warrant Os Assault, Battery A Jay county resident Ivan Fox, who resides in the Bryant area, was taken into custody Friday night by Adams county officers, along with authorities from that county. Fox was picked up on a warrant issued by the Decatur city court, on a charge of assault and battery brought against him by Donald Burkhart, a Jefferson township resident. After being returned to the Adame county jail Friday night. Fox was released when he posted 8100 bond.

A first team all-star goalie in the AHL, Worsley posted five shutouts in 1963-64 and made an excellent start in bettering his 2.72 goal average. Worsley had good attackers up front as Willie Sutherland beat Baltimore goalie Marcel Pelletier twice while Cleland Mortson and Guy Rousseau each scored a goal. ~ The victory was a pleasant coaching inaugural for Quebec's Bernie (Boom Boom) Geoffrion, • the former Montreal Canadien star who succeeded Floyd Curry.
