Writer Makes Sleep Study Experiment By DICK WEST United Press International WASHINGTON (UPD - A few weeks ago, I wrote a column about "sleep education," based on some literature I received from the Self - development Research Foundation. Inc. , Since then, I have gone into the matter more deeply, including a'"sleep study” experiment of my own. Frankly, it didn't pan out too well. In theory, sleep education is a fine thing. According to the foundation, it workd like this: You get a tape recorder that turns on and off automatically. Then you put a speaker under your pillow. After you have gone to sleep, the machine switches on and begins to play something educational. The material is impressed upon your subconscious, and when you wake up you are smarter than when you went to bed. Lose Learning Time “With sleep education you use the one-third of your life that is lost in sleep,” the foundation says. My trouble was, I didn’t have a tape recorder. The foundation offered to sell me one for $126.70, but I didn’t have $126.70 either. So I had to make do with the material at hand. What I did was borrow my daughter’s clock radio. I set it for 2 a.m. I was not then aware that the station to which it was tuned left the air at midnight. My subconscious picked up nothing but a humming noise until the station resumed broadcasting at 4 am. Precisely at that hour, my wife and I were awakened by a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. I daresay I am as patriotic as the next man, but the National Anthem at 4 am. is a too much- You feel kind of silly standing at attention in your pajamas. After that, at the request of my “wife, I moved my sleep education experiment to the living room couch. Gets Prepared Making certain the radio was tuned to an all night station, and that the volume was ' not high enough to interrupt my slumber, I closed my eyes and prepared to further my education. “How did it go?” my wife asked the _next morning. - “It’s been a hard day’s night,” I said. It turned out that I had tuned in a station that played nothing i but Beatle records. I may now be the only man in America who has their entire repertoire imprinted on his subconscious. According to the foundation, "your subconscious records every impression faithfully, like a tape recorder, and plays the information back to you when you need it." That may be true, but in the light of my experience I think I should add this warning: Unlike a tape recording, your subconscious cannot be erased.

Convict Captured In National Forest RHINELANDER, Wis. (UPD .—A cross-state automobile ride in which police said a convict held his wife and a county sheriff hostage at gunpoint ended Wednesday night when the convict was captured deep in rainsoaked Nicolet National Forest. John Soulier, 33. an inmate at the Waupun State Prison, was being held today at Forest County jail at Crandon, Wis. Dist. Atty. Leo Lownik said he would seek a rape charge against the fugitive. Deputy Elmer Landeck, in temporary charge of the Oneida County Sheriffs Office here, said Sheriff Alfred E. (Butch) Sommers, 59. was transporting Soulier from Rhinelander to Waupun when Soulier ered the sheriff and wrested away his gun. Soulier then took over the wheel of the patrol car and drove more than 125 miles away to Wabeno in southern Forest County. Police sail he stopped at a Wabeno home, left the sheriff handcuffed in the car, and 1 * raped a woman in the home. . He drove to the Cozy Corner Case, where his estranged wife, Gloria, worked and forced her at gunpoint into the car. He abandoned the car when it bogged down in mud in the Nicolet National Forest. Soulier forced his wife and Sommers from the car and marched them about a mile and a half into the woods. At the pleading of Mrs. Soulier, Landeck said, Soulier let the sheriff go and turned the gun on his wife. Then Souliers went in another direction and Sommers wandered to an area where conservation department crews were working. From there he phoned for help. Mrs. Soulier was not injued.
