80,000 late Monday night on winds of 25 miles per hour. Directly in its path was the Sonoma County Hospital, with 250 patients, and a hall housing 61 student nurses. The National Guard activated a medical unit at the armory in Santa Rosa and rushed trucks to the area for an evacuation, if necessity. But, a small group of profession firefighters and volunteers were determined to save the hospital. The trucks were lined up to provide light, and the men battled the flames on three sides of the hospital grounds with hoses, bulldosers, shovels and any piece of equipment that would distinguish a flam€. The patients remained in their beds, and the student nurse remained in their quarters as streams of water were played on the roofs of the structures. The flames shooting to heights of 50 feet roared on by. “I think we’ve got it licked now,” said National Guard Capt.
