| Shraluka’sSlants I By Bob Shraluka Good news for the local hockey fan — the season is fast approaching, and the trips to the Memorial Coliseum will be much more enjoyable and much quicker than in past seasons. While traveling to the football game at Auburn last week, we discovered that the highway work is nearly completed and the road is now dual-laned from the cloverleaf just north of the International Harvester to the Coliseum. 1 In the past, it was a long, long trip from the cloverleaf to the Coliseum, as invariably you got behind two or three trucks on the winding stretch of highway that leads to the building. All that will be i a thing of the past when the new dual lane is opened. Also, it appears work is nearing completion on the underpass. Instead of waiting for traffic traveling in the opposite direction to pass a driver can just wheel his machine to the right and into the underpass, which leads directly into the Coliseum parking lot. As to the season, well, its on the way. Bud Gallmeier, the fine hockey writer for the evening newspaper in Fort Wayne, recently disclosed in his column that Ken Ullyot, general manager and coach of the Fort Wayne Komets, is leaving on a talent hunt. Ullyot’s trip will take him through the training camps of several of the professional teams on the West Coast. Gallmeier also reports that Cal Purinton, who became the favorite of the Fort Wayne crowds in his rookie season last year, may be back with the team. Ullyot says that Purinton wants to return to Fort Wayne for another season. One reason for this may concern a rumor we heard some time ago from a very good source that says Cal has a sweetheart in Berne! Hockey really “boomed” in Fort Wayne last season. There were two crowds over 8,000, which is capacity for hockey, and several numbering between 6,000 and 8,000. Included were a number of local people, including this writer and the wife, who have season passes and rarely miss a home game. The Komets open training camp on October 20 this year, and play an exhibition game on Oct. 30. The first of 35 home games will be played at the Coliseum on Saturday, November 1. Ice hockey is an exciting sport and a game played only by men. Lou’ll be reading more about it in these pages as the weather begins to cool. * * * * * It sure is good to hear of the football successes being ejpyed up Manchester way by big Steve Hazel- ® wood. A star Yellow Jacket tackl£ for the past two seasons, Mr. and Mrs. Jge|s son has apparently already clinched a starting- berth' on Manchester’s defensive eleven, though just a freshman. A wonderful lad and a great athlete, big Steve should make Manchester quite a football player for the next four seasons. Writing of Hazelwood reminds us that another Decatur young man is still on the Indiana University football roster. That would be Steve Blythe, older brother of Yellow Jacket backs Bill and Sam. This any high school experience, who weighs about 185guy never ceases to amaze this writer. A junior without 190 pounds, on a Big Ten football team!

Hazelwood Wins Starting Spot At Manchester Steve Hazelwood, star tackle lor the Decatur Yellow Jackets the past two seasons, has won a spot on the Manchester College defensive eleven. Hazelwood, who tips the scales at about 230 pounds, will be at defensive tackle when the Manchester eleven opens its season this weekend at Alma, Michigan. The former star Decatur performer left for initial practice sessions and the opening of school the first of last week. Though only a freshman, he has already earned a starting spot with the Manchester eleven. At Fort Wayne Manchester will be in Fort Wayne on Saturday afternoon, September 26, to meet Taylor, and several local football fans are already making plans to attend the contest and see the popular Decatur youth in a college uniform. Hazelwood is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hazelwood, of 342 Mercer Avenue. Also an outstanding grappler on the school wrestling team for three seasons, Hazelwood earned first team all-NEIC-recognition in football last season, and also received honorable mention on the United Press International all-state team. .001 Seperates Three In AL Race: Phils Magic Number 11
UPI Sport. Writer The first three-way tie for a pennant in major league history became a real possibility today when the American League’s three contenders found themselves separated by a mere .001 in the standings. All that’s needed to make it an official three-way snarl at the top is for the New York Yankees to beat the Los Angeles in their twi-light game tonight., The Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles, who became locked in a two-way tie after Wednesday’s games, are idle. The race reached its most frantic stage of the season on Wednesday when the White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1, the Yankees downed the Angels 94 and the Orioles lost to the Minnesota Twins 2-1. That put the White SOx and Orioles in a flatfooted first-place tie with identical 83-61 records for 5.91 percentages with the Yankees right behind at 85-59 and .590. The White Sox and Orioles each have 13 games left to play while the Yankees have 18. Tie Playoff Possibility In the event of a three-way tie, the teams will play a round-robin with the first two teams losing two games being eliminated. The only two-way tie in the AL’s hsitory occurred in 1948 when the Cleveland Indians defeated the Boston Red Sox in’ a one-game playoff. The National League has had four playoffs — ih 1946, 1951, 1959 and 1962. The White Sox, who think of the raoe in terms of a battle of bullpens, trailed 1-0 until the seventh when a single by Bill Skowron, Pete Ward’s double, a wild throw by Mickey Lolich and Jim Landis’ single vaulted them into a 2-1 lead. Eddie Fisher, who has relieved in eight of the White Sox’ last 10 games and nine of their last 12, took over for- tiring Gary Peters in the eighth and preserved the soph lefthander’s 18th win of the year. Either Fisher or Hoyt Wi 1helm has finished eight of the White Sox’ last 11 victories and either knuckleballer seems any worse for the wear. Maris Homers L i The Yankees, who have won' nine of their last 13 games for the fastest recent pace of the three contenders, saw RogerMaris hit a two-run homer to open up a 5-3 lead. It was Maris’ 22nd homer of the season and the I,oooth hit of his career. Jim Boiton received credit for his 16th victory with relief help from Steve Hamilton and Pedro Ramos. The Orioles, stroggling at a .500 pace since Sept. 1 mostly because of light hitting and a weary bullpen, jnanaged seven hits off Minnesota’s Camilo Pascual but four of them were by Brooks Robinson and Pascual struck out 12 batters. The Twins scored both their runs against rookie 16-game winner Wally Bunker in the fourth inning on Harmon Killebrew’s 47th homer, two walks and a double by Pascual. Indians Win Two „ The Cleveland Indians swept a doubleheader from the Washington Senators 3-1 and 3-2 and the Boston Red Sox routed the Kansas City Athletics 10-1 in other AL action. In the National League, Houston shaded Philadelphia, 6-5, Milwaukee defeated St. Louis 3-2, Cincinnati dawned Chicago 5-3, New York blanked San Francisco 4-0, and Pittsburgh beat Los Angeles 7-5. Sonny Siebert pitched a six hitter and hit a homer and a double for the Indians in their opener and then Sam McDowell went 7 1-3 innings for his ninth victory in the second game. Johnny Romano homered for Fall Banquet Os Golf Assn. On September 22 The fall "banquet for members of the Decatur Golf Association will be held at Villa Lanes, Tuesday evening, September 22, at 6:30 p. m., according to an announcement issued* today from Don Elder, president. All members planning to attend are requested to confirm their reservations by contacting the pro-shop at the Decatur Golf Course by Sunday. Trophies for the city league winners and winners of the flights in the city tourney which climaxes this weekend will be presented and the election of officers for the coming year will be held.
the Indians in each game and Billy Moran had three hits in the nightcap. Tony Conigliaro hit his 22nd and 23rd homers, Dick Stuart his 33rd and Bob Tillman his 15th as the Red Sox backed Bill Monbouquette with a 16-hit attack. Monbouquette went the route with a Id-hitter to win his 11th game against 18 loses. National League The Philadelphia Phillies’ invisible ally — time — is back at work for them in the National League pennant race. Although more than two weeks remain in the season, the Phillies have reached the point where they have a practical magic number—the number of victories that will clinch the pennant even if their rivals win all their remaining games. The number is “11" — meaning that if the Phillies win 11 of their last 16 games, it’s all over — no matter what the other contenders do. Those 11 victories would give the Phillies a season total of 99 —a total which is now inaccessible to the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants. z* Actually, a ‘SOO-pace — eight Victories in their remaining 16 games is almost certain to do the trick. That .500 pace would give the Phillies 96 wins and mean that the Cardinals would have to take 15 of their last 16 games to win the flag. Tlie Reds would have to take all 17 of their games and the Giants could only tie for the pennant. Countdown Continues And so the countdown continues even though the Houston Colts slowed the Phillies’ march toward their first flag since 1950 with Wednesday night’s 6-5 victory. The Reds were the only contender to win --beating the Chicago Cubs 5-3 —while the Milwaukee Braves

defeated the Cardinala 3-2 and the New York Mate topped the Giant* 44. The Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Loe Angeles Dodgers 7-5 in a so-what game. The Colts kayoed IT-game winner Jim Sunning with a four-run fifth-inning rally climaxed by John Bateman’s tworun single to snap the Phillies’ three game winning streak. Ruben Amaro singled home two runs in the eighth to cut the Phillies' deficit to one run but Bob Bruce came on In relief to preserve Hal Brown’s third win against 15 losses. Johnny Edwards knocked in three runs with three singles and Vada Pinson, Frank Robinson and Deron Johnson had two hits each to lead an 11-hit attack that brought Cincinnati’s Jim Maloney his 14th win. Ron Santo hit his 27th homer of the season for the Cubs. Homer Is Disastrous Denis Menke's three-run sec-ond-inning homer off Ron Taylor proved disastrous for the Cardinals although they knocked out Denny Lemaster with a two-run rally in the eighth. Doubles by Curt Flood and Lou Brock, an error and a sacrifice fly by Bill White gave the Cardinals their runs before Bob Tiefenauer retired the side. Tracy Stallard pitched a fivehitter and struck out 10 for the Mets, whose eight-hit attack was led by George Altman’s two-run homer and a double. Gaylord Perry suffered the first loss of his career to the Mets and saw his season record reduced to 11-10. Donn Clendenon, Jim Pagliaroni and pitcher Vern Law hit homers in tht midst of a fiverun second inning Pittsburgh rally that blitzed Phil Ortega and dealt him his ninth loss. Law went eight innings to square his record at 12-12 with Al Mcßean pitching a scoreless ninth.
