Texas, Navy Among Top Teams To Open By United Press Intrnational Texas and Navy, who finished 1-2 among the nation’s top college football teams last season, are favored to win their opening games of the 1964 campaign next weekend. The Longhorns, who proved their right to the national championship by whipping Navy, 28-6, in the Cotton Bowl last New Year’s Day, entertain Tulane Saturday night. Tulane won only one of 10 games last season, so this one could be a slaughter. Navy drew a much tougher opening onponent. The Middies, led by the incomparable Roger Staubach, will visit Penn State Saturday afternoon. Coach Rip Nit'any Lions posted a 7-3 record last season but may have trouble matching that mark this year because of the lack of an established quarterback. Five other teams that finished’ among the top 10 in the UPI ratings last season also launch their ~1964 campaigns Saturday. . Nebraska (No. 5), the Orange Bowl champion, hosts South •Dakota, Auburn (No. 6) entertains Houston, Mississiopi (No. 7) hosts Memphis State, Oklahoma (No. 8) visits Maryland, and Alabama (No. 9), the Sugar Bowl champion, entertains Georgia. Illinois (No. 4), which beat Washington in the Rose Bowl, and Michigan S'ate (No. 10) do not swing into action unti Sept. 26 Pittsburgh (No. 3) bowed to UCLA in its opener last Saturday and gets a chance to lick its Wounds this weekend. -: ■ / American I. mum* G. Squabble Rages Over Yank Sale BOSTON (UPD—The squabble among American League officials over the controversial sale of the New York Yankees to the Columbia Broadcasting Sys'em • (CBS) has been taken up by league President Joe Cronin. The league’s chief executive replied publicly Monday to repeated charges by Chicago White Sox owner Arthur Allyn. Even as Cronin issued his reply, Allyn and Kansas City Athletics owner Charles Finley repeated their accusations and demanded another league meeting. The two owners charged that an opinion by attorney Paul Porter that sale of the Yankees was not presented "in its entirety” at the Sept. 9 league meeting called here to vote approval of the transaction. Cronin, whose baseball career includes tours as a play, manager and general manager, pulled no punches with Allyn who is one of his ten bosses. He described Allyn’s charges as “totally unfounded” and released documents to prove it. At the same time he expressed “reg-e‘” that the debate continued to be made public. For Cronin, taking up Allyn’s challenge could be a serious blow ‘o his role as ranking candidate for the baseball commissioner’s job when Ford Frick retires next year. The fuss centers on whether Cronin withheld information from the owners when they last week approved the sl4 million sale by an 8-2 vote. < Lucas Still Unsigned CINCINNATI,'Ohio (UPI) — With Oscar Robertson and Tom Thacker signing coptracts Monday with the.
