_ Hie Big Switch I - Bvwy day MON newspapers are switching from years of backing national Republican candidates to the 1964 Democratic ticket of Lyndon B. Johnson and Hubert H. Humphrey. The Kansas City Star, which had not indorsed a Democratic candidate since Cleveland in 1892 is typical. Three Vermont papers had never backed Democrats, but now back Johnson and Humphrey. When the Kansas City Star switched, they wrote a very long editorial explaining their reasons. The primary reason is that Sen. Goldwater’s record in Congress b actually contrary to the record Os the majority of Republicans — which may come as a surprise to many Republicans. The Star b not, and never has been, a liberal newspaper. They are moderate conservatives. But the Star feels sincerely that Sen. Goldwater is more than conservative — he is opinionated. Opinionated to the degree that he would be potentially dangerous as president. Tile Star felt that Sen. Goldwater has demonstrated an inability to work with fellow Republicans that would make it impossible for him to work with our allies If he were president. In other words, the Star feels that even Conservatives should support Johnson and Humphrey rather than Goldwater and Miller. Humphrey has every ability to lead this country if something should happen to Johnson. ♦ But what of Miller? He has none of the personal magnetism that attracts people to Goldwater personally. He would be in a worse position that poor Andrew Johnson, when he inherited the Civil War problems, and with no better hope of solving the problems than our only Impeached president. The Dallas Times Herald and Houston Post, bot'h supporters of Nixon and Lodge against Kennedy and Johnson, now support Johnson and Humphrey against Goldwater and Miller. Why? The Times Herald feels that Johnson is better able to carry the burdens of the presidency for all Americans — and the frightened peoples of the world. The Post points to Johnson’s badership, and Goldwater’s lack of it. Editorial written by —* _______ Dick Heller

The People’s Voice This column ix for the us* of our readers who wish to make suggestions for the general good or discuss questions of interest. No articles will ba published without signature of the author. O O Exiweaa GrattMa Dear Friends in Christ: This finds us already nearly halfway across the Pacific Ocean on our way back to our friends in Japan. We have now only memories of Decatur and the many new friends we met there during those short five months. We are deeply gratful for the warm welcome given to us not only by the members of the United Church of Christ, but by the people of the larger Decatur community as well. The children were particularly happy with their school experience and the many friends they made there. It is our prayer that others who enter your community, regardless of color, nationality or religious creed, may enjoy the same warm welcome that we found there. As we are away from our home in the United States we will welcome letters from you. We don’t promise we will always answer them individually but our address is as follows: 120 Hokko, Kitami, Hokkaido, Japan. Sincerely yours, Signed, Dick and Martha Lammers and family.
