Manufacturers, retailers — even laborers — have a large voice in setting their own "prices” — whether wage, wholesale, or retail. Farmers have none at all. They are at the mercy oi the so-called "market” price. You may notice we said so-called and “market” in quotations. We believe they are justified. We cannot understand how anyone can’actually bei lieve that the amount needed, and the amount for sale, is setting the price. It just isn't at all. We don’t pretend to know who is — we do maintain that the price is patently unfair at present to the „ farmer. - ,■ And we also maintain that the price may well become unfair to the retailer and to John Q. Citizen who needs meat and milk for his family. It may well be that the government — state or federal — will have to step in and limit the profits of the wholesaler or packer. We just don't understand how anyone can justify raising wholesale or retail prices on meat with hogs still selling around sl7 a hundred to sl9 a hundred. It isn’t right. Farmers, middlemen, and the general public all have rights involved. The farmer has been cheated long enough. But government, the only protector of human right, has a duty, to step in if all the cost, and a little extra profit, Is fostered off on the general public. We sympathize very strongly with the NFO, its leadership, and all farmers. For years we have encouraged them to take an active part in raising the price they receive. We hope that they will find an effective method — but one that will not .treat the general public unfairly. That is why we have favored, and probably will continue to favor, price supports and production controls — a fair price to the farmer, middlemen, and public alike. Editorial written by Dick Heller
