The bullets missed and no one was injured. | In announcing the incident, i an American spokesman said the United States has I<dged a 1 strong protest against such 1 "dangerous, unjustified" shooting which "could lead tq extremely serious consequences.” The United States, in noting that the car was about 400 yards from the Red army sentry when he opened fire, termed the action "unprovoked and undisciplined.” A U. S. note called for “appropriate disciplinary action” against the Soviet soldier involved:''—and demanded “necessary steps to prevent a similar incident in the future.” The American spokesman said the sedan was turning around in a street near a Soviet military base in a sparse-ly-settled area of East Berlin when it was fired upon. He said the car was not in a restricted area and that other army patrols had driven through the same area in. the past without incident. Informed sources said other American patrols have driven past the Russian compound since the incident without trouble. The Russians -simply took the. protest note without giving any explanation of the incident or showing any reaction. The U. S. Army regularly sends sedans with " uniformed drivers and passengers on tours of East Berlin as a manifestation of its right to move freely anywhere in the city. ’ The Russians send, similar; automobile patr q1 s through, I West Berlin. ' Soldiers and officers on such patrols do not carry arms. I The U.S. protest said the • men fired on by the sentry "were exercising their rights’ of freedom of movement in the 1 Soviet sector ed Berlin, -rights also enjoyed by Soviet personnel in the Allied sectors of Berlin.” The United States protested to the Soviet ambassador in East Berlin, Piotr Abrasimov, and to the commander of Soviet forces in East Germany, Gen. Ivan Jakubovsky.
