By DAVID NYDKX t'PI Education Specialist At thia point in the summer vacation it is common tor children to become bored. After many weeks of unplanned activities they often become restless and somewhat annoying to their parents. If this seems to be happening, it is time for parents to step in and help. A parent can usually judge if this is necessary by instinct. Some other indications could be a lower interest in going outdoors to play, returning home earlier than usual, restlessness in the evening, lack of ambition or initiative. The first step may be a change of scenery. Try going to a different park. Arrange to visit a friend in anotheueighborhood. If possible, a trip to dad’s office and lunch together might be interesting. Instead of ‘ going to the beach try a pool or available lake. Change the normal routine in whatever way is possible. Children become bored the same as adults. It may be time to start planning a few trips. Zoos, museums, historical points of inter"’est, and recreational spots are usually big events for children.

types serve to break up the regular routine play in the neighborhood. Toys and games should be changed regularly. This doesn’t always mean purchasing new ones and throwing good ones away. Some parents constantly put toys away and bring them out again after 2 or 3 weeks. This prevents children from getting tired of a particular game. party and truly enjoy them, selves. If beds are not availsble, they will have loads of fun using blankets or sleeping bags on the floor. • Parents might get some ex. cellent ideas from their children. Hold a discussion with everyone donating suggestions. One suggestion may give someone else another idea. Planning together is fun and usually successful. Talk with other parents. They may have some good ideas. Breaking up the normal routine with a variety of activities helps to make the normal routine more interesting and enjoyable. It is not- necessary to drop the regular activities. Just take a rest from them every once in a while.
