Your Insurance System **** What do you know about social security? ■ _____ --<■ Os course, you know that you pay la something every payday, and that when you reach 65 you can begin to receive Social Security retirement benefits. Perhaps you know that you can retire at 62, if you are willing to take reduced benefits. But besides being involved personally as policy holders so to speak, millions of people are not too sure just how social security works. First, it is insurance, not a handout. No one “gives* you any thing when you retire, or draw disability benefits, or receive survivors’ pay- - merits as a widow or dependent child. What eomes hack in these forms has already been bought and paid for by the premium you and your employer have put in on a fifty-fifty basis.. (If you are un- • der the “self-employed* feature, of course, you bear the whole cost.) It’s equivalent in principle to private insurance you can buy, sot an annual premium, a private policy that will pay you $125 a month at age 65, for example. But you may be turned down as a poor risk. Social security, with 76 million people participating now, is big enough to balance off poor risks against good. About all you have to do to get this insurance is to be employed in a covered occupation. Second, “taxes don’t go for social security. Your income tax goes to the treasury for other things. Your social security contributions go to the social security trust funds — the treasury really only collects them and passes them on. All of the benefits come from the trust fund, which pays all of the operating costs Leo. So social security acts very much like any insurance cooperation, paying Its own way and maintaining reserves — some sl9 billion today, as a separate going cos-, cern. Retired workers today receive an average of r $77 per month. Widows drawing survivor’s benefits get an average of $73. For the disabled, the average is higher — s9l. A dependent child who has lost an insured parent draws $62 a month. And* a retired couple average $115.50. Whore else can you buy this kind of insurance for anywhere near what this costa you? We are in the process of amending it, to improve it, right now. Like everything else, what was good enough for yesterday is not good enough for tomorrow. But when your tomorrow of retirement or disability come, you’ll be mighty glad Social Security has you insured in its records. - — ~ Written by Sen. R. Vance Hartke
