By ED SAINSBURY UPI Sports Writer CHICAGO (UPIi —The pros won two ways in the annual battle between the National Football League champions and the best of the 1964 college crop of players. First, the league champion Bears won the game, 28-17, the 20th victory for the pros in the 31 - game series. Second, the NFL teams and the American Football League officials who happened to be watching found out they’ll get. some fancy rookies when the Stars join their pro clubs this wekend. Taylor Is Standout Standout of the crop was Arizona State’s Charlie Toylor, who’ll join the Washington Redskins. Taylor led the Stars in rushing with 36 yards in seven carries. He passed for one of the Stars’ two touchdowns, a 14 . yard heave to Ted Davis of Georgia Tech. He caught two passes for 34 yards, one of them covering five yards for the Stars' second touchdown. He set up his own scoring pass when he recovered a funmbled punt by the Bear’s Billy Martin on the Bears 16. But there’ll be dividends for the others too. George Mira of Miami, who'll join the San Francisco 49-ers, connected on eight of 18 passes for 70 yards. Pete Beathard of Southern California, property of the Kansas City Chiefs, hit on five of seven for 75 yards, but had two passes intercepted. Paul Warfield of Ohio State, ear—

Birds Win Opener Os Big Series; Thomas Aids Phils
By 'CURT BLOCK UPI Sports Writer The Baltimore Orioles adhere to the historians claim that we can predict the future by studying the past. In September of 1960 the Birds came into Yankee Stadium trailing New York by one percentage point. The Yankees promptly dismissed the Oriole pennant hopes by sweeping the four-game set. What makes the comparison with this season more intriguing is that Steve Barber was jselected to open that crucial “series but lost to Whitey Ford. Friday night Barber was brought out of the bullpen (his last four appearances have been in relief) to start opposite Jim Bouton, the hottest member of Yogi Berra's staff, at the start of another critical four-game series. The result was a 2-0 Baltimore triumph. Barber, now 7-8 with the league and 3-0 versus New York, needed relief help from veteran Harvey Haddix as the Yankees threatened often but produced never, as the Orioles gained possession of first place by one game. Orioles Strand Nine A crowd of 37,167 saw the defending American League champions reach Barber and Haddix for 10 hits and strand a total of nine men as the duo proved untouchable in the rough going. Baltimore broke Bouton s scoreless inning string at 18 by pushing across a run in the first inning on a hit batsman and singles by Norm Siebern and Brooks Robinson. The final run was Jerry Adair’s sixth home run on reliever Bill Stafford’s first pitch in the eighth inning. Chicago blanked Boston 2-0; Cleveland took two from Minnesota IM and 8-2; Detroit beat Kansas City 5-2; and Washington stopped Los Angeles 4-3 in the other American League contests. Frank Thomas, Now A Phillie, Is Happy Man
PHILADELPHIA JUPD— The big, husky guy with the crew cut couldn’t stop grinning. Veteran slugger Frank Thomas was happy. Not only about his trade from the cellar-dwell-ing New York Mets to the pin-nacle-perched Phi 11 ie s, but about his performance his first time in a Philadelphia uniform Friday night. “I felt like I gave them something right away,” Thomas said after driving in two runs with a double and a single in four trips to the plate as the Phils were routing his former teammates, 9-:4. “Getting a double my first time up was great,” he said, referring to his run-producing blow in the first inning. “Then that second hit and RBI (in the third inning) just made things feel a little better.” “It’s not only having a good night personally," he said. _“lt’s helping the team win at a time when victories are so important right now for them — I mean, for us.” The victory, coupled with second place San Francisco’s 5-3 loss to Cincinnati, boosted the Philadelphia lead to 2*6

both Chicago.runs with a sixth inning single and an eighth inning squeeze bunt as the Sox snapped a three game losing skein.* Starter Ed Connolly took the loss, the Red Sox sixth in a row. Detroit scored twice with two out in the third on four singles and a hit batsman to down Kansas City despite a perfect four-for-four night for A’s outfielder Manny Jimenez. Gates Brown, George Thomas and Bill Freehan homered for the Tigers while rookie Bert Campanerias belted his fourth of the year for the A’s. Indian rookie southpaw Luis Tiant allowed ond hit in the final eight innings of the opener as he struck out 10 and was backed by home runs from Joe Azcue and Woody Held. Earl Battey and Tony Oliva homered for the Twins. Larry Brown’s two singles, good for three runs, helped Pete Ramos to his sixth victory of the year in relief of starter Sam McDowell. Los Angeles scored three times in the last of the ninth before reliever Ron Kline closed the door and saved Claude Osteen’s 10th win of the year. Washington outfielder Chuck Hinton drove in two runs and Don Zimmer’s 10th homer accounted for another. National League How sweet it is. Frank Thomas wasn’t complaining about his past treatment nor was he bitter as he explained to reporters how it felt to be traded from the dreary New York Mets to the first place pennant hopeful Philadelphia Phillies. “I’ve been in the National League 14 years and I’ve been in last place for 12 of them,” the father of six revealed at Connie Mack Stadium Friday night after he contributed a single, a double and two runs-batted-in in the Phils’ 9-4 win over the Mets. “Helping the team win at a time when victories are so important for them — I mean, for
games. The Phillies, hoping to Itrengtthen their right hand hitting platoon, gave up three players to draw Thomas from the Mets Friday. One was out-fielder-infielder Wayne Grame of the Phils’ Little Rock, Ark., farm club. The other two players going to the Mets will be named later, the first next Wednesday and the other by Oct. 31. To make room for Thomas, the Phils asked waivers on righthand pitcher Gary Kroll, who has no record in three innings he worked' for the Phils since his recent recall from Little Rock. Thomas, who boosted his batting average four points to .258 on his first night as a Phil, said he wasn’t a bit surprised by the sudden deal which sent him across the playing field at Connie Mack Stadium from the Mets dugout to that of the Phillies. "Nothing that happens in this game surprises me,” he said. “So, you see, I’m more happy than surprised. I hit pretty good in this park and I hope I can have a few more nights like tonight.”
us, was great,” said Thomas, still finding it hard to believe he’s been dealt into the center of a pennant race. Long Ball Threat The addition of a righthand long ball threat, in exchange for three minor leaguers, may very possibly bring a flag to Philadelphia for the first time since the 1950 Whiz Kids. Rival managers have been saving their southpaws for the Phils, a practice which may be curtailed somewhat now that Philadelphia boasts a first baseman sporting credentials of 275 lifetime home runs and an average pushing .270. The Phillies broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning .when they tallied four times on a combination of walks, bunts and Texas League singles. The winning rally came at the expense of three Met pitchers, including loser Bill Wakefield. Ed Roebuck, the second of three Philadelphia hurlers, gained his fourth triumph to go with two setbacks. Elsewhere in the National League, Cincinnati bested San Francisco 5-3; St. Louis whitewashed Houston 4-0; Los Angeles routed Milwaukee 5-1; and Chicago won two from Pittsburgh 7-3 and- 4-3. Red hurlers Jim Maloney and Bill McCool fanned 15 Giants as Frank Robinson paced the nine - hit Cincinnati* attack with a single, double and his 19th homer. Orlando Cepeda (19) and Jim Hart (18) had roundtrippers for the Giants as they fell 2% games behind Philadelphia. Veteran southpaw Curt Simmons racked up his 12th victory of the campaign, scattering five Houston singles. Los Angeles staked Phil Ortega to a 5-0 lead before the 24 - year -old righthander threw a pitch and he responded with his first vi'ctory since May 19. Stokes Benefit Game Will Use New Lanes MONTICELLO, N. V. (UPI) —Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics and Wilt Chamberlain of the San Francisco Warriors will be the opposing centers in the fifth annual Maurice Stokes benefit basketball game on Aug. 18, at Kutsher’s Country Club, it was announced today. The pairing of the two outstanding pivot men in the National Basketball Association is expected to provide added interest because the new foul line area of 16 feet with which the NBA is experimenting, will be used for the first time under game conditions. The widening of the lane from 12 feet will be tried in NBA play until approximately Dec. 15. when the league’s board of governors will decide whether to make the 16 - foot lane a permanent addition to the pro game.
