More Johnson Support The nomination Thursday of Ross Bass, Tennessee Democrat who voted for the civil rights bill, over three-time Tennessee governor Frank G. Clement for the remaining two years of the late Sen. Estes Kefauver’s term, puts Tennessee’s 11 electorial votes strongly behind President, Lyndon B. Johnson thia November. Both Gov. Clement and M. M. Bullard, businessman - farmer also in the race, tried to make Civil Rights an issue. Both criticized Congressman Bass for voting for the bill when it originally passed the house. Bullard, who ran last, called him ‘The most dangerous politician ever to come upon the scene in Tennessee's history”, but the governor took a more moderate course. Representative Bass stated that cdvil rights isn't an issue, and pointed instead to the progressive ' record of his accomplishments while in Congress. The result: Bass 304,401; Clement, 214,060; Bullard, 68,845. This overwhelming victory, and Clement's first statewide political defeat, indicate that civil rights isn’t the paramount consideration in Tennessee it is elsewhere. Sen. Goldwater, who is counting heavily on “blacklash” vote from those who hate Negroes, already had infuriated the Volunteers from the great state of Tennessee by publicly calling for the sale of the Tennessee Valley Authority, which has brought great prosperity to the state, following a hundred years of ' rangling and buck-passing by private industry and private business. It has also provided the goad and competition that has made private power a respectable ’ thing — something that it wasn’t a few decades ago. Sen. Goldwater is leading in polls in about 13 of the 50 states —a condition that is expected to atrophy before the November election, leaving him with electoral supporters about as numerous as Alf Landon’s in 1936 — the last time the GOP dared nominate a radical-conservative. The People’s Voice This column la for the use of our readers who wish to make suggestions for the general good or discuss questions of interest. No articles will be published without signature of the author. 0 O Dear Mr. Heller: I have written this letter concerning your editorial of August 3 in which you supported foreign aid. I have written this letter opposing foreign aid and would like to have it printed in your ‘People’s Voice” column. I wrote a speech in school last year opposing foreign aid, but it is probably too long for the “People's Voice.” I’m not sure how long of an article is allowed, so I will give only part of my speech. Many of the Government’s dollars now being spent on foreign aid should be used for clearing slums and ridding poverty within our own United States. Our foreign aid is supposedly sent to underprivliged in underdeveloped lands with the result that these people will appreciate the help and become our allies — but how many true allies have we won through our billions of dollars of foreign aid — how many countries would really come to our side and fight for us if need be? Soviet Influence remains at high tide. Our dispensations of money have won us neither gratitude nor affection. I will agree that some of our foreign aid helps under-privileg-ed people around the world, but I believe the millions of underprivileged in our own country should be helped first. Why should money be taken from foreign aid and used in America? The answer is stated in the fact that there are in America 7,000,000 slum families —of our population. The first responsibility of the U.S. Government is to the America people. There is poverty in the United States and there are millions here in our own country who should be aided before we aid foreign countries. There are terrible slum districts in the large cities such as New York and Chicago, but you can find poverty right here in Decatur. These slums must be replaced by good housing. Good housing makes contented families. Contented families are not restless and are not attracted by “Isms”. It would cost a great amount of money to remove these slums, but we would be paid back with interest. Our country’s economy would rise with the added employed from the housing, and our percentages of illiteracy, disease and crime would all be greatly reduced. Slum clearance and rehousing is the greatest force for peace in the world today. We can clear our slums with the money now being used for foreign aid. When poverty no longer exists in America. then we can begin thinking about foreign aid — but not before. . Sincerely yours, % Craig McEwan P.S. Contrary to your editorial, anti-foreign alders don’t have “rocks in their heads.” ~Rob«rt S. Anderson, Attorney ESTATE NO. SSIM NOTICE TO ALL PERSONS INTERESTED IN THE ESTATE OF MAHY JANE SAYLORS. Monmouth Teocher Attends Workshop MUNCH, Ind. — Marjorie Fifer, R. R. No. 1, Decatur, teacher in the Monmouth School, attended recently an education workshop called “ Introduction to Guidance in the Elementary School” at Ball State Teachers College during the second summer session. Preble Firemen Plan Tractor Pull The Preble Firemen tractor pull committee are busy making final plans for their 12th annual tractor pull to be held in Pr?ble on the Clarence Weber field according to Hugo Bulmahn, chairman of the committee. Others on the committee are Marcus Schueler, Eugene Weber, Ralph Mankey, and Fred Ehierding. This year it is to be a 3 day event. The one half m.p.h. minimum speed contest will be held Thursday and Friday night, August 13 and 14 at 7:30 p. m. And the one and a half m. n. b. minimum speed contest will be held August 15, Saturday, at 12:30 and 7:30 p. m. The group will use an automatic speed indicator which will drop a plate marking the exact place where the tractor is slowed down to the minimum speed permitted. This takes the guess work out of the officiating and has eliminated most of the arguments usually accompanying a tractor pulling contest. There are expected to be tractors pulling with over 100 h. p. All people interested in tractor pulling are invited to come to Preble, Indiana, and watch the contest. A collection will be taken. All proceeds will go to the maintainence of the Preble Volunteer Fire department.
