Bicycles In Decatur Every Bumnrar for the past dteade, Decatur has averaged half a dozen bicycle - car accidents. Fortunately, we haven’t had any fatalities. But apparently it is going to take a fatality to wake up the parents of bicyclers to the local problem. Every bicycle-car accident is serious. It injuries, frightens, and shocks a youngster, his or her family, and driver and family of the car involved. In most cases, the car driver is not at fault. He is driving along, as carefully as possible. Suddenly, seemingly from no-where, a bicycle runs a stop sign, comes off a walk, out an alley, or appears from out of the dark (with no lights, of course). Or there may be three or four riders abreast, hogging the street, who panic and fly in front of the car, instead of to the side. We do not mean to excuse the occasional careless driver, nor in any way lesson a driver’s attention to pedestrians and bicyclers. But no driver can replace common sense on the part of the bicycler, and the bicycler’s parents. A few years ago, when Bob Cole was mayor, it was proposed that bicycles be licensed, and that riders be permitted to ride only, after they carefully demonstrated their ability to obey all rules of safety and good judgment. This has been done in cities for generations. It is needed today in Decatur. At that time, parents balked, because they felt the 25c license fee, to help cover the expense of administrating the inspections, was exorbitant! What is the value of a child’s life? Surely more than any fee for safe bicycle riding! On Decatur’s streets every day you can see — arrogant little cyders driving three and four abreast, riding merrily from sidewalk to street, across streets, back onto sidewalks, U-turning without a casual glance backward, or riding after dark with no lights. A, simple licensing procedure, with suspension for violations, would stop this, and stop it fast. Editorial Written by Dick Heller

Tuesday night at the Adams county 4-H fair was a big evening for a pert young sophomore from Decatur Catholic high school. On that night 15 year old Mary Lichtle took her third consecutive senior grand championship in the 4-H horse show. A veteran of five years’ 4-H activity, she took the award this year by placing first in two out of five events. Tliough none of her wins, has been by extremely wide margins, she has managed to turn in a first place performance each year. Last year she tied for the senior grand champion award with John Carroll. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Lichtle, route 3, Decatur, she won this year's event riding her horse. Rusty. She is a member of the Root Roving Rangers 4-H club. In Tuesday’s show she took first place in the goat tie and keg bending events, second in speed and action and fifth in senior horsemanship and the stump race. These performances gave her the highest total in the show. Todays Market < P. P NTEWART A CO.
