Coach Norm Van Brocklin said the squad’s practice Thursday ’afternoon was “very routine.’’ But added it was “natural.” He said it was too early to tell what effect the inury would Jiave on Franckhauser’s • foot--ball future or on the rest of the team. Franckhauser was injured after tackling rookie fullback Phil McWatters in scrimmage. He complained of dizziness and was rushed to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. By GEORGB C. LANGFORD UPI fltwrte Writer The Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles are rehearsing for the dramatic American League production of “September in August” which opens next Friday in Yankee Stadium and runs for 19 straight games. The drama was written and produced by an unwitting schedule maker who exhausts all games among the three contenders by Aug. 23, with nothUleft for the September etch drive” except meetings with the also-rans. The Yankees play 15 consecutive games with the second - place Orioles and third - place White Sox beginning a week from today in New York with home series in each city to follow. Immediately after Baltimore and Chicago Ante* with the Yankees they engage each other in a final fourgame set at Chicago beginning Aug, 24. Fbr years the Yankees have deprived the AL of a true September pennant chase. Now, with the promise of a red hot race, the schedule is the villain. Gain On Yankees Both the White Sox and the Orioles shaved a half - game off the idle Yankees’ lead Thursday. The Orioles moved within a half game of first place by outslugging the Minnesota Twins with five home runs for a 7-4 decision. Jackie Brandt cracked two homers in support of rookie Dave Vineyard’s second victory since being called up from ttre lnternational League two weeks ago. Vineyard had a five - hit shutout until the eighth when the Twins scored twice. He needed relief help in the ninth when pinchhitter Ron Henry hit a two-run homer. Gary Peters, ■ who yielded only three hits in his last victory, held the Detroit Tigers to three singles, and Bill Skowron tripled home both runs in the siath inning for a 2-0 victory. 1 victory lifted the White • SOX within two games of the ■ YRpkees and dealt Dave Wick--1 eMiam his eighth loss. It was ’ trf fifth time Wickershafn has ' faged to win his 13th .game. ’ In the only other American ’ League contest, the Senators ' rallied to stop the Indians 8-7. N. L. Results Don’t look now, but that sour pitching the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates were producing has turned to cream and is raising, both teams toward the top in the National League scramble. Both teams have suffered major disappointments with hurlora they were counting on heavily this season. The Cardinals gave up 18game winner Ernie Broglio to the Cubs after a dismal start; Bob Gibson, also an 18-game winner, fell flat after winning his first four games, Ray Washburn had a recurrence of his arm ailment and the St. Louis relief corps was ineffective. Hie Pirates sent Don Schwall to the minors and 17game winner Bob Friend was hit hard. Pittsburgh, however, has won eight of its last 10 games and during the stretch has received three complete-game victories, phis excellent relief pitching by Al Mcßean to jump into third {dace, four games out of first. Long Win Streak The Cardinals currently own the league’s longest winning streak, six games, which includes three route-going performances and five victories by lefthanders. St. Louis is only six games behind the leagueleading Phillies in fifth place. Vernon Law, who has won two games in the Pirates’ streak, held Houston to five hits for a 1-0 victory in the
