Shraluka’s Slants By Bob Shraluka The true sports fan enjoys seeing men in competitive battle. He appreciates their often-supreme efforts, sometimes in the face of impossible odds, in an attempt to be victorious.. The sports fan lives in a special world. A world that is joyous when his club wins the pennant, a world that is happy when his favorite forward scores 30 points, and a world that is sorrowful when his team’s middle linebacker breaks an ankle. Sometimes his eating habits, his sleeping, his entire day or week, are effected by the performance of “his team.” But when tragedy strikes, as it did on a lonely road near Rensselaer Sunday night, the sports fan is stunned and grieved—no matter who his favorite performer or team happens to be. Willie Gallimore and John Farrington were two fine football players, and two fine men. You didn’t have to know them personally to realize this, you only had to read the comments of their shocked teammates. Owner-coach George Halas said, “This is the saddest day in the Bears’ history. Something like this reaches the heart and makes everything else seem petty. We are share the same feelings.” And, you can bet they do. From New York, to Green Bay, to Los Angeles. Tragedy strikes in every home, yet, when it strikes in the world of sports, it reaches more families, more homes, than in most cases. What effect will the death of these two stars have on the Chicago Bears this fall? Only time will tell. It might sink a strong football team into doldrums from which they may never recover. Or, it may have just the opposite effect. More than one team has struggled through a regular season to win its division title, and then gone on to capture the world’s championship, only to falter badly the following season. There are no new worlds to conquer that next season, only to repeat. Take the Los Angeles Dodgers for an example. — . .. . »• , : This is one thing that the Chicago Bears were having to contend with as training camp opened a few weeks ago. But, with the tragedy of the past weekend, there will be no complacency in the camp of the Bears this season. They have already dedicated this season to Gallimore and Farrington, and this may just carry them to another world’s title. In a pivotal contest this season, the Bears may be trailing by a touchdown with only a 'minute or two to play in the game. During a time out session, the memory of Gallimore and Farrington will be in each player’s memory, without doubt, and this could easily make the Bears a very tough team to beat this fall.

Nitschke Appears Fully Recovered

By United Press International There seems to be no justice in the National Football League as the rich get richer. But when the rich are the talentladen Green Bay Packers the rest of the NFL teams had better be on their guard. Ray Nitschke, the most valuable player in the National Football League championship game two years ago, seems to be fully recovered from a broken atm which kept him sidelined for the final games of last season and his teammates have this information first hand. Nitschke, along with ends Dave Robinson and Willie Davis, ran rampant over the Packers offensive unit during a full-scale scrimmage Tuesday. The three defenders stopped end sweeps and were in tackle after tackle. Even second-year man Lionell Aldridge, reporting late because of Army duty, looked especially good in thwarting Green Bay passers Bart Starr, Zeke Bratkowski and rookie Merv Holland, , As if a healthy defense were not enough, fullback Jim Taylor and versatile halfback Paul Hornung were also impressive. It could be that the rest of the NFL coaches will soon be calling for an equalization draft to break up the Packers. Wally Lemm, St. Louis Cardinals head coach has quickly installed the Cards’ basic offense, with some variations to be added later. “I want the team to

Spahn. “But if I can help the club there, it’s okay with me. If I go to the bullpen, I’m going to try and do the job.” Spahn, who last year led the National League in completed games. has finished only once since May 19 — and that game he lost 3-2 to the Philadelphia Phils. Sunday, he was battered by the New York Mets in the first game and as a relief pitcher in the second set the same batters down easily. The pressure appeared off in his second game appearance and he was throwing hard, “Warren’s willing to be a reliefer,” said Bragan. “He’s got the arm. He can throw. He looked good Sunday.” Bragan indicated he might use* both Spahn and Bob Sadowski, a young hurler counted on heavily by the Braves this year, as spot starters. He said he considers Denny Lemaster, Hank Fischer, Tony Cloninger and Wade Blasingame as the regular four starters.

Phils Win Behind Banning; Three A. L Leaders Beaten

By FRED DOWN UPI Sports Writer The Philadelphia Phillies have found their winning touch again now that Jim Running has recovered from his "lost month.” And just in time, too, because it looked like the Phillies were headed for a long plunge down the National League roller coaster. Three straight losses to the St. Louis Cardinals had reduced their firstplace lead to a mere half game on the eve of a three-game series with the second place San Francisco Giants. The situation cried for an “old pro" pitcher <and that's just what Gene Mauch picked when he named the 32-year old former Detroit righthander to face the Giants in Tuesday night’s opener. TTie, perfect game pitcher of June 21 had won only one game in July but he responded with 8 1-3 innings of a four-hit pitching that gave the Phillies a 4-0 victory and restored their lead to one and a half games. Baldschun Stops Rally

Running faltered when Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda singled with one out in the ninth but red-haired screwball pitcher Jack Baldschun came out of the bullpen to throw a double play pill to dangerous Willie McCovey and end the game. Baldschun’s two-for-one toss thus protected Running’s 10th win of the season compared to four losses. The Phillies scored all their runs against lefty Billy O’Dell in the fifth inning, which opened with singles by Tony Taylor and Alex Johnson, an error by McCovey and a late throw by second baseman Hal Lanier. Gus Triandos, who hadn’t hit a homer since April 26, chose his opportune moment to crease the left field foul pole wi‘ h a three-run round tripper. The Milwaukee Braves halted the Cincinnati Reds 3-2, the St. Louis Cardinals outslugged the Chicago Cubs 12-7, and the Los Angeles Dodgers routed the New York Mets 9-0 in other games. Houston at Pittsburgh was rained out. Denis Menke’s two-run sev-enth-inning single gave Hank Fischer his ninth , victory with relief aid from Sob Tiefenauer as the Braves came frojm behind. The rally came against Sammy Ellis, who relieved Jim O’Toole when the latter’s arm tightened up after a 43-minute delay caused by rain. Until then O’Toole had yielded only one hit —a homer by Mike De La Hoz — and seemed enroute to his 12th victory for the Reds. Curt Flood’s two-run triple and Mike Shannon’s two-run homer .were the big blows of a five-run 10th inning that enabled the Cardinals to deal former teammate Larry Jackson his ninth defeat. Bill White and Tim McCarver also homered for the CardipaLs while Joe Amalfitano connected for the Cubs. Ron Taylor rectived cred-

it for his fifth win. Don Drysdale, showing no effects from the hairline fracture of the thumb he suffered last week, pitched a seven-hitter to score his 13th victory for the Dodgers ? Drysdale was backed by a 14-hit attack topped by a two-run homer and a two-run double by Ron Fairly and three singles by Peewee Oliver. Tommy Davis extended his hitting streak to 10 games with two singles. A. L. Results There's a new breed in the American League — v A breed that won’t roll over and play dead tor the New York Yankees. Its members are the products of years of planning and bushels of bonus money and you couldn’t find a more representative pair tean Dean Chance and Jim Fregosi of the Los Angeles Angels. act big, too — big enough to slap down the Yankees just when ft seems the haughty champs are going to bust open the league. Chance, 23, and Fregosi, 22, combined Tuesday night to brake a Yankee five-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory that prevented New York from gaining a full game on both the second-place Baltimore Orioles and the third - place Chicago White Sox. Chance, a oaby-faced righthander with a curve that crackles, allowed only two hits and struck out eight while Fregosi hit for the cycle —a homer, triple, double and single in four tries — to the delight of a crowd of 35,976 in Los Angeles. For Chance, the victory was his 10th of the season against

five losses. Until the seventh inning when Mickey Mantle hit his 20th homer of the season, he had pitched 37 consecutive scoreless innings against the Yankees, including 29 this season. The brilliant effort reduced his earned run average to a glittering 173 — lowest in the AL. He had gone 69 innings without yielding a homer when Mantle connected.
