A New Idea About two weeks ago Decatur businessman Roy L. Kaiver appeared before the Adams county commissioners and asked them if a room would be available for five county health organizations to share after the county school superintendent's office is closed. Adams county has some very good health associations, ranging from the TB association and polio group to caucer and mental health. But groups have no central office from which to dispense their informational program. While the general public probably thinks of these agencies mainly in terms of what they collect, it is what they circulate in the form of lifesaving facia that is most important. What are the danger signs of cancer, where quick detection can save your life? What should you do if your spouse worries about things over which there is no control? Is tuberculosis still a problem? How do you help in arthritic research? These questions can all be answered by the various local health agencies. Rut they need an office from which to do it. Renting an office would be expensive overhead. Separate offices would be very expensive. But if five or six of the groups went together, and set up a joint office, to be open five days a week, with different volunteers, representing different groups, each day, then it might be very good for the people of Adams county. Each day misery creeps into numerous local families — just because they do not heed the readily available information from our local health groups. There is little excuse in this country for ignorance. It is the one luxury that we cannot afford. It takes more fromusthan an government tax program,' and takes ‘ it without giving any return; If you are active in one of the local health groups, and think this might be worth exploring, why don’t you contact Mr. Kaiver, and see if you can meet and discuss this idea further? Your local newspaper is more than happy to give as much information as possible. But personal contact, through meeting with volunteers, and reading the full literature, can help far more. We all have loved ones who might have been helped if we had had more information — and we all have loved ones who will suffer if we don’t keep up with the research progress in all fields, by contacts with our local health agencies.
