Decatur’s Three Pony League Entries Record Wins Last Night; Braves Take Over Sole Possession Os First Place
Decatur’s three entries in the Adams County Pony League, behind strong pitching and some timely hitting, all posted victories Monday evening. The Braves romped to a 13-1 win over Adams Central in the first game of a twin-bill at Worthman Field, chalking up their fourth victory against a single loss, which keeps them at the top of the league standings.
The Cardinals scored four times in the initial inning of the nightcap and then held on for a 5-3 decision over Berne, their fourth win against a pair of defeats. At Monmouth, the Cubs hit the long ball and behind the combined hurling of Pete Mayclin and Alan Hutker,' whipped the host team by a 7-4 count. The Cub victory was their fifth against two losses, as they rest in the runner-up spot, just percentage points behind the Braves. Braves Win The Braves scored in every inning as they whipped winless Adams Central in a game called after five innings due to the league’s 12-run rule.

The Decatur nine* scored "once in the first inning and Adams Central tied the score with a tally in the second frame on a triple by Heyerly and a ground out. The Braves, however, came back with three runs in their half of the second on a single by Ken Gause, a walk to Chuck Cook, a double by Mike Schnepf and a wild pitch. Eleven players batted in the third as the Braves scored five times on three walks, singles by Cook and Steve Johnson and a double by Tony Conrad. They finished their scoring with three tallies in the fourth and a single one in the fifth.
Two Brothers Lose To . Three Kings
Three Kings of Hoagland whipped Two Brothers of Decatur in a Vim League battle at the McMillen diamond here Monday evening. The winners pounded out 11 hits and sewed up their victory with a four-run fifth inning. A triple by Kirchofer and a single by Laisure put the Hoagland clab into a one-run lead in the first inning and they addded a second tally in the fourth on a single by Girardot and a double by Gerry. Singles by Lepper kirchofer and Laisure featured the four-run fifth which gave the winners a 6-0 lead. Two Brothers scored its lone run in the last of the fifth when Dick Marbaugh singled, went to second on a walk and scored on a sacrifice by Merkle., Hoagland added single runs in each of the last two innings for the final margin. Two Brothers will return to Vim League play next Monday when they entertain International Harvester at 8:15 p.m. at the

Adams Central outfielder Gary Hirschy was beaned in the second inning of the game by a pitch, and was taken to the hospital for x-rays. The youth was not seriously injured, however, and was released from the hospital with no more than a headache. Cards Edge Berne The Braves took over sole possession of the county league when the Cardinals edged Berne by a 5-3 score in the nightcap.

The defeat was the second in starts for Berne, and their second loss to the Cardinals in five days. "• The Cardinals sewed up the contest with a four-run first inning, as righthander Steve Burge- scattered five Berne hits and didn’t allow the visitors a run after the third frame.. single by Schwartz and a triple by Beer put Berne into a one-run lead in the first inning, before the Cards staged their uprising. Dave Tester's single started the big inning and after two were out. Burger and Doug Halberstadt poked back-to-back doubles and George Thomas singled. Thomas scored later on a wild pitch, giving his team a 4-1 lead. A walk to Habegger, a Cardinal error and Reusser’s double cut the margin to 4-3 in the third, but Burger opened the Cardinal half of the inning with a home run which ended the scoring for the evening. Held Lead ~ Berne got just two singles off Burger in the final four inings and never seriously threatened. Burger went the route for the victory, whiffed 12 and walking four, while hitting one batter. Beer, rangy Berne righthander, struck out nine and walked three while taking the loss. Cubs Win The Cubs, behind the hurling of righthander Pete Mayclin, and a strong relief job by Alan Hutker, bested Monmouth at the Monmouth diamond last evening. A ground - rule double by Alan Bedwell and a single by Hutker put the Cubs into a one run lead in the second inning and they added four tallies in the third frame on a walk to Charley Brown, a double by Don Williams and Bedwell’s single, which scored both Brown and Williams. Pete Mayclin walked and Bedwell later scored on a balk. Memmouth scored its first run in the third on a single by Irwin, a hit batsman, and a wild pitch. The Cubs tallied again in the fifth on Dan Strickler’s long home run, and Monmouth scored in their half of the inning on a Cub error, a walk and a passed ball. The winners closed out their scoring with a pair of tallies in the sixth on a single by Hutker, Dan Pettibone’s triple and Denny Rash’s ground out. Monmouth rallied for two runs in their half of the sixth when Krueckeberg singled, Miller walked and Hakes reached base on an error. Hutker relieved Mayclin with one on and two out and after walking one batter, whiffed the next hitter to end the threat. The righthander retired the side in order in the seventh, striking out two hitters. Mayclin struck out 11 and walked five in receiving credit for his second win without a loss. Three Winners In ! Killy League Monday The Koufaxs, Musials and Mantles won Kitty League games at the Southeast diamond Monday. Jeff Stuart and Rich Litchfield poked home runs to provide the margin of victory as the Musials edged the Mays by an 8-6 count, and P. Geimer homered for the Erskines who lost a 3-2 contest to the Mantles. A three-run second inning led the way for the Koufaxs as they trimmed the Kalines, 6-2. Tigers Beat Senators, Red Sox Take Lead The Red Sox took over the top spot in the Decatur Little League Monday evening without playing, when die Tigers downed the Senators by a 5-2 score. .«„»*• Hie loss left the Senators with a 5-3 record, while the Red Sox own a 5-2 mark. The Tigers are now 3-6 for the season. No details were available, as the league's official scorers were working the Pony League games at Worthman Field. ' Adams Central Downs Monmouth, 12-4 Adams Central romped to a 124 victory over Monmouth Monday evening in a high school baseball game at the Monroe diamond. A threetfor-four performance by Case, including a pair of doubles, and a double and a home run by Rex Funk paced the 10-hit Adams Central attack off three Monmouth hurlers. Puffer’s Divots: Daily Democrat Wins First Half Title In City Golf League Monday
by Dick Reidenbach The Decatur Daily Democrat, defending 1963 city golf league champions, won the first half competition Monday evening to gain a berth in the 18-hole playoff at the close of city league play in September. Winner of the second nine weeks of league action will meet the Democrat to determine the 1964 champion. The Democrat team defeated Morningstar Auto Sales 10 and 2 last evening to end the firsh half with 84 points won as against only 24 lost. Gerber’s Super Dollar a close contender throughout the season for the first place berth, finished second with 74 points won and > 34 lost. Gerber’s split 6 and 6 last night with Decatur Industries. Morningstar Auto Sales, always a strong team in league play, finished in the third spot with 62 points credited, losing 46. Elder Shoots 35 Don Elder, 1963 low medalist for the year, won .low medalist honors last evening with a one under par round 35. Elder hit all nine greens in regulation, birding number 6. Elder plays for Morningstar’s. Only two other golfers broke ‘ into the 30’s. John Pfister, a member of the Decatur Daily Democrat team, three putted the final green last night to finish with a one over 37. John Baumann, captain of Gerber’s Super Dollar Market team, fired a three over par 39. Sixteen players broke bogey. Beverly Trout had third low score of the day. In second flight competition, Dorothy Hoffman won the days event and had low score for the flight. Marilyn Tutewiler won the low putt award and placed second in low score. Jean Ray was second in low putts and Alice Gage was third in low score.
