THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT Published Every Evening Except Sunday by THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT CO., INC. btered at the Decatur, Ind., Post Office as Second Class Matter Dick D. Heller. Jr. ........ President Mr*. John Shirk Vice President ,) Mrs. A. R. Holthouse ... T _. Secretary Chas. E. Halthouse .... Treasurer Uncle Sam’s Debt -— 0 Sen. R. Vance Hartke recently released the following explanation, so that you can explain to your friends why the national debt, the pet bugaboo of the right wing, is not such a terrible thing after all. You may be one of those people who worry about the national debt. Ypu read in the paper that Congress has voted to raise the allowed limit from $315 billion to $324 billion. “Terrible!,” you say. “It says here that the national debt comes to $1,627 per person! What a terrible heritage for our children.” But did you know that this is almost 15 percent less than the national debt was in 1946 on a per capita basis? True, it was $269.9 billion at the end of 1946 and at the end of May this year it was up $312.3 billion, more than Jls percent. But remember this: the 1946 population of 141,229,000 has grown to more than 192,000,000 today. So each person’s share of the national debt has dropped from $1,908.79 at the end of 1946 to that $1,627 today. This means that your share of the National Debt is actually $271.00 less than in 1946. <• Besides, to get a true comparison you have to look at these figures in the same kind of dollars. Today’s dollar, since the 1946 consumer price index of 68 stands at 107.8 today, will buy only as much as 62 cents would buy in 1946. So that $1,908.79 of debt in 1946 would be equal to $3,078.69 per person in today’s dollars. Put that against the current $1,627, and instead of complaining we ought to realize that we ar? almost twice as well off on the national debt as we were, in 1946.’ Or look at our national income. In 1946 what economists call the GNP — Gross National Product — was $210,663,000,000. Today the rate is some S6OB bililon annually. That’s as if in 1946 you had income of $4,212 and debt of $5,398. But today your income is $12,160 and your debt is $6,246. You have cut your debt from 128 percent of your pay to 51 * percent of your pay. Wouldn’t you think you were doing all right? Or a third way of looking at it. Would you worry about a debt of $6,246 if you owned outright property worth more than the debt? We rarely hear the fact that Uncle Sam’s property owned outright is worth $315.8 billion, which is more than the debt total. By any normal standard — since we own more than our debt total and have an annual income more than double the debt —we are fully solvent. Besides, we are enjoying the best prosperity in history. Uncle Sam is really in pretty good shape after all! By Sen. R. Vance Hartke

David L. Baker Is Named Job Printer David L. Bakery a 1964 Decatur high school graduate, has bden appointed to a position as job printer with the Decatur Daily Democrat following a threemonth apprenticeship. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore (Dutch) Baker, of 1415 W. Adams street, young Baker will work with the present job printer, Owen K. Baker, of 213 Rugg street. The older Mr. Baker, who is no relation to the new job printer, suffered a heart attack last December, and has been ordered by his psysician to "take it easy” and not to work full time. A WEEK IN WASHINGTON, D. C. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Reber and children and Mrs. Robert Wemhoff, Donald and Eleanor, spent the week of June 15 in Washing- > ton, D. C. The highlights of the stay included a visit to the senate
during the debate on “civil rights.” Indiana's Birch Bayh was presiding at the time. While they were watting in line to go through the White House, President Johnson arrived from New York on the south lawn via helicopter. However, tight security prevented a good view of Mr. Johnson. One of the most beautiful, but sad sites in Washington is the grave of John F. Kennedy. Even though there were several hundred people there, the only sounds that could be* heard were the roat ot airplanes overhead and the firing of 20 gun salutes in the distance. People would stand there for great lengths of time, paying silent tribute to their former President The group presented a floral bouquet to the guard, which he placed near the grave. Probably the most memorable part of the trip was the visit to the home of Mrs. John F. Kennedy. While they stood across the street, after perhaps 15 minutes had elapsed, out came Caro-
line and John-John on the backs of secret service men. They weir put in a car and whisked away only after John-John had been stilled from crying., The police guard said that the children were being taken to Hyannis Port to be with their mother. 1 They then proceeded to the address of 3307 N. Street, where John Kennedy lived until he entered the White House. On those steps where many a presidential decision was announced, they had their pictures taken. I Disorderly Conduct Charge Is Filed Benson Eugene South, 47-year-old resident of 734 Spencer St., was arrested Monday evening at his home on a charge of disorderly conduct by the city police. South was charged at 8:15 p. m., and cited to appear in city court at a later date. Last Saturday morning, South was fined $1 and costs in the same court cm a public intoxication charge.
