The entire Cleveland traveling party and the plane crew which flew the squad here early Friday from Minneapolis were directed to take the sulphur pills daily for the next eight days. Alvis, hospitalized in “good” condition, was suffering from “neck rigidity ” but was reported to be “quite comfortable.” Announcement of his illness came Friday night, nine hours after he was hospitalized as a precautionary measure when he developed a high temperature. Dr. Thomgs Tierney, Red Sox team physician, made the diagnosis in a brief" statement. “Clinically, he has early spinal meningitis. He is quite comfortable but he still has a high fever, high blood count and the neck rigidity is indicative of spinal meningitis.” The doctor, who said spinal tap tests on the 26-year-old father of two would not be completed until late today, and club officials immediately den|ied reports that Alvis’ illness would cause postponement ol any Cleveland games. “I see no reason why the rest of the squad carutot continue to play,” the physician said, adding that they would receive drugs daily and undergo examination if there was the slightest indication that the disease might spread to others in the 40-man travelling party.
