Postmaster Warns On Mail Box Use ‘‘lf your mail box is used for the deposit of material other than mail, don’t be surprised when you are charged the firstclass postage for it.” postmaster John Boch warned today. For many years the post office has picked up and delivered any addressed aterial in any mail box, or even on the street, if it appears to be ready for the mail. The receiver is then charged the postage. If this were not done, Boch pointed out, hundreds of thousainds of articles would never be delivered. Also, there would be so much stuff cluttering up the postal boxes that patrons would overlook their important fist-class mail. Seems Funny at First “At face value there is a seeming inconsistency in the postal regulation that the patron must furnish an approved receptacle for his mail but that he cannot use the receptacle as he wishes. This apparent conflict becomes known eventually to most people who receive the mail from a mounted carrier.” So says Boch. According to the postmaster, the post office department policy is that when mailable matter is found in private mail receptacles without evidence of prepayment of postage, it shall be treated by the post office involved as sut> ject to postage. This means that the postmaster shall collect from the offending patron whatever amount of postage would have been paid if the item had been submitted originally for processing and delivery by the postal wrvice. Concern for Safety “This regulation does not grow out of any desire on the part of the post office department to be dictatorial,” says Boch, "but rather out of a concern for the safety of the mail and the protetcion of the monopoly law on which the postal service is based. There have been numerous instances in which valuable .mail has’got mixed up with newspapers, political literature, circulars’, church notices, etc., and has been either lost or destroyed. Sometimes also, mail boxes have become so filled with other than postage-paid items that the carrier has had no place to put his ‘iigitimate mail’ “So don’t be offended if you are asked to cooperate with your postmaster in keeping items out of your mail box. The postal service is only trying to help you. in the event that you have questions on this ar any other matter, please call 3-3205.”
