You, Your Child And The School

By DAVID NYDICK UPI Education Specialist Language is a major part of daily life. It is used in writing, speaking, playing, working. Proper use of language is an asset in most any situation. Readers have asked for suggestions to improve pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, and speaking voice. Some of the following ideas may be helpful. PRONUNCIATION Individuals learn to talk by imitating the speech of people with whom they associate. Children will tend to develop speech patterns similar to their parents. * Parents can help by using correct pronunciation when talking with their children. Setting a good example is very important. Children or adults, can help themselves by becoming aware

of their own speech. They can listen carefully to the pronunciation of people who speak correctly. They should then compare and mhke a conscious effort to improve their own pronunciation. listening to one’s own voice over a tape recorder is a valuable aid. VOCABULARY Extensive reading will help improve an individual’s vocabulary. He should make an effort to become familiar with new words. The average adult learns about 50 new words a year. A definite effort to learn two or more words per week will have an obvious result. New words can be learned by copying them on a small card, writing the meaning, and using the words in sentences. The words should be reviewed regularly. It is also helpful to make

an effort to use these words in daily speech or writing. SPELLING You can increase your familiarity with many words through reading and writing. This will help you to spell them correctly. Whenever you have a doubt about the correct spelling of a word, look it up in the dictionary. Examine the correct spelling carefully. Look for uriusual combinations of Jeters, smaller words within the word, or any other clue which might remind you of the correct spelling. SPEAKING VOICE Is your voice sufficiently clear, loud and interesting so that others hear and understand what you are saying? Tone and volume are extremely important when speaking. An individual can easily improve his voice by making a definite effort. When speaking to a group, talk to the individual furthest away. Then everyone will be able to hear you. Change the volume and tone of your voice so that listening won’t became monotonous. Speak slowly so that words and meanings don’t become difficult to interpret. A good technique is to group words in phrases pausing between each group. The tape recorder can be helpful. Record

sl6 billion, or 41 percent • Net income per farm for 1063 la up almost $375, or J.. 12 percent - . Total after-tax income of the American people is np $64 hillion, or 18 percent Real disposable income per family is up more than S7OO > (1968 prices) or 9 percent. It required a series of government actions—immediate anti-recessionary measures, programs to boost employment and stimulate industry, and the biggest income tax cut in history to spark our economy to current levels. But it also required the tremendous efforts of business and labor to maintain wages and prices at non-inflationary levels. As a result, wholesale prices have held steady. Consumer prices have edged up only about 1.2 percent a year—more than offset by the added quality industry is putting into its products. Based on this performance, we can be optimistic about ! the future. I President Johnson voiced this optimism recently when he told a group of business leaders: ' i “That future can be great" I At the same time, however, he' cautioned: “We can’t let our costs creep up—and we can’t let our prices creep up. This is where the decisions of leaders in business and labor are crucial In the case of wages, we need to match the good record of the past three years and keep the increases in line with the average productivity gain for the economy as . a whole. And average prices have to be kept stable. This will mean a good increase in real earnings for labor." is wvery reason to believe that business and labor will respond to that challenge. In addition, the threat of ' inflation further diminishes when we look at the idle labor and idle plant capacity that still need to be put to work before we need fear an inflation caused by excess demand. In short, we still have plenty of room for economic expansion. With it, we have a golden opportunity for sustained and growing prosperity. The economic skies remain sunny. There are no squalls in sight.

Exercise Is Best Wiy To Keep Cool BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UPD— Looking tor away to beat the heat? Gat out of your chair to that air-conditioned room and do is the best way to keep cool, accenting to Sid Robtoson, head of toe Indiana University department of anatomy end physiology and a nsearcher on toe effects of exercise on toe body. A former distance runner to toe Olympics, Robtoson compiled extensive data comparing athletes and non-athletes, and his findings indicate that the mare active individual is better able to cope with hot, humid weather. Acclimatization is the key to comfort, he said. By acclimatization he meanis a complicated biological process which involves the adjustment of nature’s controls within our bodies. Most important of these controls are toe sweat glands and toe kidneys. The sweat glands act as the body’s refrigeration system, he said, and toe kidneys help keep body chemistry content. For healthy persons, some exercise each day wifi help these argans to become acclimatized to toe heat. “Os course, you get hot whfle exercising but toe body’s automatic compensating mechanisms are stimulated, so that you don’t feel toe heat as much toe rest of the time,” Robtoson said. A half hour of golf, gardening or walking each day should do toe trick for healthy middleaged or older people, be said. For younger folk, he recommends something more strenuous such as tennis. Cold drinks help somewhat to relieve beat, but cold water is the best thing to drink because it has few eateries, said Robtoson. He also suggests adding a little more salt to the diet at the beginning of toe hot season, but not later on as toe body mechanisms will gradually become “acclimated” to the heat. “Exercise can be overdone," he said. “Try four holes of golf instead of a full round.” your voice, listen to it, and then record again attempting to improve it. Communication, whether it be reading, writing or speaking, is important to everyone. Individuals ere usually judged on their ability to communicate. An effort to improve tois ability will be beneficial in many ways. The skills are learned and take time to develop. Plan a program of regular practice and begin immediately. You will be encouraged by the results.
