Co-captains Greg Ladd and Denny Cookson, and sophomore Gary Busse, were the mainstays of the Deactur Yellow Jackets baseball «fem that narrowly missed a -aecood straight Northeastern Indiana conference title last spring, season statistics revealed today show. Busse led the club in hitting over the season, while Ladd posted the top conference average and led the club in several other departments. Cookson was far and away the team’s best hurler, posting one of the best records in the jchool’s history. Dadd and Cookson, both seniors, were elected co-captains by their teammates and were among 13 players who received letters. Deane Lehman was the third senior named as a letter winner, and eight juniors and two sophomores were also named. Juniors included Bill Blythe. Don FeaVel, Jerry Egly, John Meeks, Tom Engle. Jerry Conrad, Max Elliott and Gary Pettibone. Busse and Sam Blythe were the sophomore letter winners and manager’s letters were awarded to Larry Lehman and Kenny Birch. Basse Leads Busse, a late-blooming outfielder, posted a fine .345 average to lead the club in overall hitting. The husky sophomore didn’t break into the starting lineup until the sixth game, but hit safetly 10 times in his next 24 trips, and finished the season with 10 singles in a total of 29 at bats. Ladd, who wound up a sensational four-year career, followed closely behind with a .333 mark, and Max Elliott was the team’s third .300 hitter, averaging that figure exactly. Sam Blythe, also a sophomore, was near the .300 circle with a .282 mark. Ladd was the club's top hitter in seven NEIC battles, posting a good .375 average. Sam Blythe was next with a .363 mark and Busse hit at a .316 clip. Three Others Ladd, a first-string catcher for four years and a sure bet for all-NEIC honors, led tjie team in three other departments. His 13 hits were a club high, as were his 12 RBl’s and his two home runs. V Elliott, Sam Blythe, and Busse followed in hits with 12,, 11 and* 10 respectively, while Blithe was runner-up in the runs-batted-in column with eight and Elliott knocked in six.
