Yankees Whip White Sox In Double Header By FRED DOWN UPI Sports Writer The American League is on notice today that Yogi Berra and the New ..York Yankees are no laughing matter this year — whatever the experts, the astronomers or the astrologists may think. The notice took the form of a 6-1 and 3-0 Friday night sweep of the Chicago White Sox which moved the Yankees to within three games of first place. It hardly seems possible that only a week ago people were counting ’em out erf the race for reasons varying from lack of pitching to the fact they’ve never won a pennant in a year ending in four. Yankee clutch ace Whitey Ford had a hand in both victories — in the first by seconding manager Berra’s hunch to start lefty Steve Harml.on and in the second by pitching his eighth straight victory and fifth Two Escape Serious Injury In Accident Two local youths escaped serious injury in a spectacular onecar accident that occurred on U. S. 224, a mile and a half east of Decatur, around 1 o’clock this morning. Jerry Geimer, route 5, Dectur, and Brian Alverson, route 3, Decatur, were hospitalized with injuries, all believed minor, following the crash which is still under investigation. Sheriffs and state police officers are still attempting to determine which youth was driving the automobile which went out of control and rolled over three times before, coming to rest on its top. Lewis Van Poppel, of Bryan, 0,. was traveling west on 224 and told the investigating officers he saw an auto coming up behind his at a high rate of speed. The auto swerved to avoid hitting the rear of the Van Poppel auto and went out of control. The car left the road on the opposite side and traveled approximately 66 feet before striking culvert at county road 31. The auto crossed the county road, struck the culvert on the other side and rolled pver what investigating officers determined to be three times, before coming to rest on its top. The 1956 model car was considered a total loss.

shutout of the season. Extends Win Skein Ford, who doubles as a pitching coach, agreed that Hamilton was an excellent “hunch” pitching choice and the lefthander, making his first start since he was acquired from the Washington Senators on April 21, 1963, scattered nine hits, struck out eight and walked only one in scoring his fourth victory without a loss. Having demonstrated that there was nothmg wrong with his thinking apparatus. Ford then proved his arm was Aokay, too, with a five-strikeout, four - hitter that raised his won - k>'t record to 8-1 and lowered his earned run average to 1.55. Roger Maris* two- run single and Joe Pepitone’s two-run homer were the big blows of a five - run sixth - • inning rally in the opener and Tony Kubek’s two- run sixth inning homer was the key blow of the nightcap. Indians Beat A’s The Minnesota Twins defeated the Washington Senators, 5-3, the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Athletics, 3-0, and the Boston Red Sox downed the Baltimore Orioles, 7-3, in other American League action.
