A Real Fight We’ve heard of lots of kinds of fights, but here is one that really takes the cake — or pizza, as the case may be! — Two pizza cooks are fighting it out in court in plagiarism case that has fascinated aeaThe battle between Luigi Dell’Amura and Antonio Imperato started when Imperato, a newcomer to the neighborhood, opened a restaurant next door to DeD’Amura’s and put up a big sign reading: “Pizza by the Kilometer.’* That, Dell’Amura said, was shameless plagiarism. His own pizza, renowned for its length, has long been billed as “Pizza by the meter” and he even had the name patented with the Industry and Commerce Ministry. Imperato said a meter is one thing and a kilometer is an other. What Dell’Amura patented was the meter, not the kilometer. Nonsense, DeH’Amura said. First of all, the word kilometer on Imperato’s sign was divided in two so it could be read “Kilo-Meter” and be taken to mean “Pizza by the Kilogram and Meter.” Secondly, who ever heard of pizza one kilometer long? It takes Dell’Amura a lot of loving care, family know-how and an extra big oven to make pizza a few meters long. So if Imperato talked about kilometers, he was a liar, Dell-Amura said. (A meter is the equivalent of 1.094 yards; a kilometer is 0.621 mile.) Imperato said the kilometer shouldn’t be taken literally. The Vico Equense court will shortly rule on the case. In Dell’Amura’s favor is his long family tradition. His father, Antonio, long ago baked pizza at home — the restaurant then didn’t exist in the family’s most daring dreams — and peddled it in the streets to citizens and tourists. Little Luigi helped his mother prepare the dough and cut the parsley and mozzarella cheese that went into the pizzas. Luigi later went into business on his own and saved enough money to open the restaurant with the help of two brothers and two sisters and his wife, Concetta. Five of the couple’s seven children are now helping out in the pizza business. The sixth, Lucia, is a student, and the seventh, Francesco, appropriately is a lawyer and can help with some legal advice on the met-er-kilometer battle. Kditorial written W D>ek Helfer
