' In the era of the long ball, Richardson remains the only Yankee regular without a home run to his credit this year, but the smallest of all the New Yorkers gave the spectators a lesson in batsmanship Thursday with a perfect 5 -for - "5 performance in a Minnesota ball park where home runs are the rule, not the exception. At 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, the Yankee field general has no illusions about his power. >Of his 57 base hits, 50 are singles, good for a .310 average and a spot among the league leaders. The Minnesota musclemen who lead all clubs by a wide margin in the home run department could vanage only one off New York pitching Thursday while Joe Pepitone and Roger Maris each connected with two men aboard to boost the Yankees to a 9-7 victory. Although the Bomber bats gave starter Al Downing six runs in the first two innings, the young southpaw was gone in the third. Pete Mikkelsen, now 4-1, was the winner going 6 2-3 innings allowing five hits, including Jim Hall’s 11th homer. In the only other American League game, Chicago defeated Cleveland, 5-1. Baltimore at Kansas City was rained out. Chicago inched closer to first place behind Floyd Robinson’s two- run homer in the sixth off Cleveland starter and loser Dick Donovan. The White Sox have the same percentage (.667) as the league leading Baltimore Orioles but trail the Birds by one , game, having played fewer contests. Frank Kreutzer held the Indians hitless for four innings in relief of Ray Herbert who left the game with a sore elbow but nevertheless got the win, his second in five decisions.

Wax Hurls No-Hitter To Beat Phillies By JOE GERGEN UPI Sport. Writer Sandy Koufax still was one pitch away from perfection today, but the dandy southpaw is steadily zeroing in on that baseball milestone. The 28 - year -old Koufax twirled the third no - hitter of his career Thursday night in pitching the Los Angeles Dpdgers -to a 3-0 victory over the league - leading Philadelphia Phillies and missed a perfect game by inches when his 3-2 pitch to rookie Richie Allen sailed low and outside in the fourth inning. Koufax now has pitched no - hitters in each of his last three seasons, and each was closer to perfection than the other. In his first hitless performance, Sandy allowed the New York Mets five walks on June 30, 1962, and he limited the San Francisco Giants to only two free passes on May 11 of last year. • “I have this to say,” Koufax said after the game. “This was the best of the three.” Should Get Better If Koufax gets any better — and he’s given every indication that he might — he'will become the first pitcher in modern National League history to hurl a perfect game. All five perfect games in modern annals have been accomplished in the American League, the last being Don Larsen's World Series masterpiece in 1956. The Brooklyn - born Koufax, who will receive the Babe Ruth Award tonight at New York’s Shea stadium as the outstanding player in * the 1963 World Series, joins g select trio of Larry Corcoran (1800 s Cy Young and Bob Feller a who have pitched three no - hitters. No pitcher ever has pitched four no - hitters in a career. Koufax pitched to the minimum of 27 batters and struck out 12 men, marking the 54th time in his career he had struck out 10 men or more. That tied him with Feller and Rube Wadell for the major league record, which is unlikely to stand long with Koufax around. Howard Homers Frank Howard provided Koufax with all the runs he needed ip the seventh inning when he hit a three - run homer on the left - Centerfield roof, his 14th of the year. Koofoo’s no - hitter was the second of the young season but only the 'first in victory. Ken Johnson of Houston lost a 1-0 no - hitter against Cincinnati on April 23. AU of Sandy’s no - hitters have come at night, and Thursday night’s was the first he has pitched on the road. Pittsburgh defeated San Francisco, 4-2, Cincinnati stopped Milwaukee, 6-3, despite a triple play by the Braves, Chicago edged the Cardinals, 2-1, and Houston outlasted the Mets, 7-3, in other National League games. Over in the American League, the Yankees overpowered Minnesota, 9-7, and the White Sox beat the Indians, 5-1. The only other scheduled game, Baltimore at Kansas Cijy, was rained out. Rookie Steve Blass pitched a five - hitter and the Pirates erupted for four runs in the fourth inning to hang the defeat on the Giants. The Pittsburgh rally featured a two-run single by Bill Mazeroski. Frank Robinson clouted his 10th and 11th homers to provide the Reds’ Jim O’Toole with his fourth victory of the year. Robbie’s Uth home run in the ninth with two men aboard shattered a 3-3 tie. The Braves’ triple play — the third of the year — occurred in the second inning and went from secondbaseman Mike De La Hoz to shortstop Denis Menke to firstbaseman Gene Oliver. Dick Ellsworth notched his seventh victory of the year for the Cubs when Ron Santo slammed his seventh homer in the fourth with Billy Williams on base. Williams, whose leagueleading batting average slipped one point to .411, collected one double in three appearances. Dick Farrell gained credit for his eighth win, but needed relief help from Don Larsen who pitched hitless ball for 3 2-3 innings. The Colts took advantage bf - four New York errors and collected 15 hits — their high of the season — in defeating Al Jackson.

White Sox And Indians Win In Little League
Lefty Brett Lutes hurled the defending champion White Sox to a 4-0 win over the Yankees, and the Indians needed two extra innings to down the Tigers, 7-3, in the local Little League’s second night of action Thursday. Lutes struck out seven and walked just two as he tossed the first shutout of the young season, scattering five Yankee hits. His temmates got him all the runs he needed in the first inning, when they scored three times on a walk to Kurt Gerig and another to Lutes, a double by Fred Schultz, a base on balls to R o n Kuhnle and Randy Gehrig’s single. The Sox, who won the league’s title last season, added their final tally in the fifth when Gerig reached base on an error, advanced on another error and scored on Lutes’ single. Tough in Clutch Die Yanks had numerous scoring opportunities, but Lutes was especially tough in the clutch. An error, a single by Mike Augsburger and a walk to Harold Gray gave the Yankees three baserunners in the second inning, but they failed to score. Singles by Jim McConnell and Closson gave the Yanks two runners in the third, but Lutes fanned the next hitter for the third out. Singles by Augsburger and Gray and a walk to Jeff Snyder loaded the bases in the fourth, but Lutes again bore down and fanned the next hitter for the final out. Win in Eighth A four-run explosion in the eighth inning enabled the Indians to even their record at 1-1 for the season and hand the Dgers their second loss in two starts. Singles by Terry Baker and Bill Schnepf, a walk to Tim Baker, an error and a pair of fielder’s choices produced the Indians winning markers in the eighth, giving reliever Max Bedwell the pitching victory. Bedwell relieved Bill Schnepf, who, like Dger hurler Lynn Franz, hurled the first six innings but was forced to retire due to Little League rules. George Fop’s single gave the Dgers a 1-0 lead in the second frame, but the Indians erupted for three tallies in the fourth on a pair of errors and singles by Kerry Knape and John Baker. Steve Alberding’s single in the fifth and Denny Shady’s triple made it 3-2 and Rick Burger doubled and scored in,Jhe sixth to knot 'the score ana send the game into extra inings. Is it all right to begin a friendly letter to a boy “Dear Ted,” and close with "Love, Kathy,” or would this look too forward and bold? A. There’s nothing at all wrong with “Dear Ted,” this being the conventional salutation to any social or friendly letter. However, the "Love Kathy” could be toned down, and “Sincerely yours” is as good an ending as any. Q. Should a young girl ever give a gift to a man whom she has been dating and whom she especially likes? A. Not unless she is engaged to the man, and even then the only “necessary” gifts are on Christmas and his birthday. Q. Am I correct in assuming that the position of “companion” in a family is one of social equality with tire employers? A. Yes, you are correct.

Hoffa Fraud Trial Ends Sixth Week CHICAGO (UP!) — Teamster President James R. Hoffa’s fraud trial winds up its sixth week today despite yet another attempt by defense attorneys to win a mistrial ruling from U- S. District Court Judge Richard B. Austin. Defense attorney George Callaghan demanded the mistrial Thursday after he was reprimanded by Austin for interrupting the responses of a witness under cross-examination.
