A Thought For Parents This week we received a clipping, mailed from Rochester, N. Y. from John Kelley, dated May 21, 1964. Since Judge Parrish’s speech to the Adams county men- ’ tai health association concerning local youth, and the habit of glue sniffing, we thought it quite pertinent. According to the story, from Portland, Maine, a 12-year-old boy died at the Osteopathic hospital of Maine on May 20 of what a hospital official called long over-exposure to glue while making model airplanes. The boy, Merle T). Cockendorff, of Limerick, suffered from inhalation of airplane glue over a six or seven-year period. The doctor in charge, Keith A. Buzzell, M. D., hospital medical director, said the result was that the boy’s bone marrow could not produce proper amounts of red and white blood cells, ’fhe blood-clotting mechanism was affected. The boy was an avid model plane builder, and his parents asked that the cause of his death be made public as warning to other parents. This doesn’t mean that you should necessarily take junior’s airplanes away from him. But it definitely means that he should work for limited periods, in a light, airy room, with plenty of ventilation, or outside, and that he should be warned that the odor is dangerous, that it will kill him, and that he won’t be able to tell if if is affecting him, or not, because it works internally in doing its damage. Your children will have a lot of spare time this summer. Be sure it is safe time, well spent. Don’t let your carelessness cost you a lifetime of heartaches. Editorial written by - 7 Dick Heller
