Independence Now Easier For the Elderly Carefully planned kitchens with special strength-saving designs and devices are making it possible for many of the 9Mt million women who are over 65 years old and the 10 million who are physically handicapped te lead their own lives. Without such housekeeping helps, many more of these women would have to depend on someone else to make homes for them. One of the major work-saving devices is an electric dishwasher. It eliminates one of the most tiring of the day-i'n, day-out, standup jobs. It also coirtributes to good health by sanitizing the dishes. Washing dishes by hand can take up te an hour a day—or even more, depending on how many dishes there are and how carefully they’re washed. Loading an automatic dishwasher takes only a few minutes. The most convenient type of automatic dishwasher for an elderly or handicapped person is a front-loading model. It can be either a built-in unit or a portable model that rolls to the sink for use. Most front-loading portables can be converted to permanently installed built-ins. For homemakers in wheelchairs, the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at New York University • Bellevue Medical Center suggests having a built-in dishwasher raised on a platform for easy loading from a sitting position.

MODERN REFRIGERATOR FREEZER blends perfectly with ancient Japanese motif of this new kitchen.
A good kitchen Is not just a•; showplace, although it can be i that, too. No matter what the i decor-quaint, cute, austere or oriental-a kitchen needs to be carefully planned and well equipped if it is to function as an efficient control center of family life. The kitchen shown in the photo above is both efficient and attrac- J tive. It has been planned to make “homework” easier for the housewife. It is also a room guests will gather in because it’s so hand-: some. One feature that makes this a,
New Refrigerator-Freezers Offer Four-Point Program
“Recent developments in refrigerators are exciting,” the Michigan State University Cooperative Extension Service says in a new booklet. The booklet, “Choosing and Using Your Refrigerator,” was published by the Extension Service to help families choose the right refrigerator or refriger-ator-freezer for their particular needs and budget. A new model does more than jjust keep food cold, the booklet points oUft. . 1. It helps guard the health of your family by retarding food spoilage. 2. It offers temperatures from cool to cold to below freezing. 3. It protects your pocketbook —you can buy in larger quantities, save on left-overs, cut down waste, . 4. It requires little of you. Stressing the importance of combination refrigerator-freez-ers, the booklet points out that these units have separate sections for the storage of fresh and frozen foods. The freezer section, which has an insulated door, maintains zero-degree temperatures to permit the rapid freezing of foods and their long-term ! storage without loss of flavor or texture. 1 I One of the most talked-about feature? of new electric refriger-ator-freezers is no defrosting. M*ny models completely eliminate messy manual defrosting in both fresh-food and freezer sections. A few of the other features to look for in modern refrigeratorfreezers include swing-out or pull-out shelves, special storage space for tall bottles, butter and egg keepers, automatic ice cube,

good working kitchen is the large electric refrigerator-freezer, situated near both the cooking center (far left) and the clean-up area (just left of refrigeratorfreezer). With its straight, clean lines and uncluttered design, a new refrigerator • freezer like this blends well with any decor. Here it complements an oriental motif. And, although it has a large capacity for both fresh and frozen foods, it does not dominate the kitchen. It does contribute con- , siderably, however, to the kitch- , en’s efficiency.

Some models feature a freshfood section designed to maintain top quality by surrounding foods with still, moist air. This permits longer storage at abovefreezing temperatures. ' Families will have no trouble finding a new model with a builtin look. Almost all refrigeratorfreezers today have square corners and doors that allow a close fit to adjacent walls and cabinets. The trend in refrigeratorfreezer sizes is toward .larger capacities, according to the Mich- , igan State pamphlet. Many families have found they can fit a new large-capacity unit in the same floor space their old model used to occupy. This is due in part to the development of new, , thinner insulating materials.

Cool Hostess Cooks Today For Tomorrow Having a patio party in the midst of a heat wave’ Then look to your refrigerator-freezer for help, says Mrs. Jeanne Owen, director of the Wine and Food Society of New York and noted cookbook author. Mrs. Owen, a native of France who is thoroughly versed in fine French wines and the exquisite French cuisine, advises American homemakers to avoid elaborate menus that will keep them in the kitchen at party time. “Plan a simple menu, do all your shopping and basic food preparation before the day of the party. If you have one of the roomy new electric refrigeratorfreezers, you can trust it to keep everything at top quality,” she advises. Here is Jeanne Owen’s own recipe for a main dish, which should be made the day before the party and kept in the refrigerator until serving time. Chicken and Ham Ring 2 cups finely chopped cooked chicken % cap finely chopped boiled ham 1 cup soft bread crumbs moistened in milk % cup heavy cream 3 egg yolks 2 egg whites beaten stiff Salt and pepper to taste Dash of cayenne pepper Mix meat, cream, bread crumbs and egg yolks. Add salt, pepper and cayenne, mix thoroughly and fold in beaten egg whites. Smooth into a 10-inch ring mold, making sure to leave room at the top for mousse to rise a little. Cover top of mold with buttered or oiled paper and set in a pan of hot water, being careful that water does not reach top of mold. Bake in slow oven-300-325 °-for 20 to 30 minutes, or until set. Keep your eye on it while cooking, as it will be dry if cooked too long, Mrs. Owen warns. Allow to cool, then run knife around edges and invert on platter. Chill in refrigerator overnight. A thin mayonnaise sauce is good with this mousse. Mrs. Owen makes mayonnaise with light oil and thins it with cream. A chilled Chablis wine is excellent with this meal. Subtle Beams Divide Areas' Architects are utilizing subft? details in home building design to create dividers in open area homes to separate one use area from another. One of the most interesting uses o fthis technique has been developed by William Fletcher, an architect who uses the exposed post and beam timbers to divide a long living room so that the dining room is subtly separated from the living room end. Fletcher has designed the post and beams so that they protrude a few inches into the room as upright posts—and he has also exposed the~beam across the ceiling about two inches. In this delicate way he has given the dining room end of the living area a definitive boundary. One thing Fletcher does with his exposed wood members is to make sure they are finished as attractively as possible. He generally uses either west coast hemlock or Douglas fir beams generally about six inches wide, and he finishes them naturally with a clear plastic or varnish to retain the natural coloring of the woods and the interesting patterns of growth rings. Concealed metal clips are uped to install plastic-finished Marlite planks over old walls.

Home Office Deductible, Expert Says Many homeowners realized a substantial tax deduction on their recently - completed income tax forms by taking credit for expenses incurred providing and maintaining a home office, according to Robert Huff, home improvement director for Ahe manufacturer of Marlite paneling. I Huff points out that the job may be either full or part time and it makes no difference whether you work for yourself or for an employer. The home improvement expert gives these guidelines for tax deductions on a home office: 1. You can charge off that part of your actual operating expenses that pays for the space used for work purposes. 2. You can deduct a portion of your home’s operating expenses such as utilities and telephone. 3. You can deduct annual depreciation on all major items used in your work, such as office equipment and furniture. Huff says that homeowners find the basement an ideal spot for a home office, but others are converting an upstairs bedroom or a seldom-used sun porch. These improvements can be done quickly because modern paneling, such as Marlite woodgrain planks can be put up right over old walls. No finishing is necessary These plastic-finished hardboard planks can-be damp-wiped clean; never need refinishing. Marlite paneling is available at local lumber dealers. Ceiling Block Conies In Patterns Washable Marlite ceiling block now is available at local lumber dealers in two interesting patterns — gold lace and nugget. These 16” square blocks of plastic - finished hardboard can be installed right over old, cracked ceilings. Adhesive and concealed metal clips are used to secure a strong bond. In, addition to the two new patterns. Marlite ceiling block is available in white and parchment. Wood Paneling Will Accent Neutral Walls Don’t forget that wood is a color, too! ' - , The high-fidelity tones of a handsome woodgrain paneling might well be all you need to accent neutral walls in a distinctive living room treatment, according to Robert Huff, home improvement. director for Marlite paneling. Yellow and orange accessories, which give a bright accent to the walls, complete the unusual decorative treatment. Huff points out that 16”x8’ Marlite woodgrain planks can be installed right over existing wallsl. Home handymen can do the job, utilizing detailed instruction sheets provided with each package of paneling. Maintenance is reduced to the minimum with this plastic - finished hdrdboard paneling, which can be cleaned with a damp, or sudsy cloth. Refinishing is never necessary.
Hooray! Defrosting's Doomed Summer is the time for new crops—and new crops, whether babies, brides or new green beans, usually call for additional refrigerator space. One of the most insidious space stealers is the frost that forms in freezer compartments. Besides stealing space, it hides labels and locks in cube trays and food packages. But lucky Is the lady who has one of the new free-of-frost electric refrigerator-freezers. In the I •a •txa . mb -1 - 'IJHOb 11 a I
CHECK THE DIFFERENCE—if your frosen food compartment looks like the one at top, it’s time to shop for a new electric refrig-erator-freezer. Below is the freezer section of a new model with plenty of room for lots of ice and quantities of food. Best of all, it never has to be defrosted. first place, she never, never has to defrost. In the second place, ice cube trays and all the frozen food containers always can be lifted out of the freezer with ease. And, with no frost, freezer capacity never diminishes, as it does when layers of frost start to form. This means the new electric refrigerator-freezers that never have to be defrosted give full value. Although they may not take up more floor space than the old, thick-walled units, the new ones with thinner, more efficient insulation have much more storage space-for both fresh and frozen foods. And they keep food deep-frozen, not just barely frozen as the early ice-cube compartments did. Grained Panels Ease Ceiling Care End washing and repainting woes by covering old ceilings with factory - finished woodgrained Masonite panels or Marbletone, which looks dike traveltine marble, suggests the Home Service Bureau. A quick wiping with a damp sponge keeps them in prime condition. Both woodgrains and the Marbletone patera lend themselves to beam treatment, too, for extra-special appearance. A good looking and functional cutting board for the sewing enthusiast can be fashioned by sawing a piece of predecorated Marlite hardboard to size.

Early American Decor Popular For New Kitchen To create an Early American decor in a modernized kitchen, consider using woodgrain paneling on the main wallls and accent this with brick textures at key points.
