Yellow Jackets Defeat Gibson Hurls Angola In Season Windup Shutout For
One inning can sometimes make an entire season,, which is the final chapter in the 1964 season for the Decatur Yellow Jackets. Dandy Denny Cookson and his Decatur teammates ended their season with a sparkling 3-0 victory at Angola Wednesday afternoon —a season that boiled down to one bad inning back on MonBasketball School At Berne In July Final plans are nearing completion for the Adams county basketball school to be held at the Berne high school gymnasium for a 12day period in July, directors Charles “Porky” Holt and Larry Andrews announced this morning. day, May 11, at Columbia City. • That one bad inning was the sixth, when Columbia City scored four times to swing a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 victory, and this was what cost Decatur a second straight share of the Northeastern Indiana conference's baseball title. The defeat at Columbia City was a disastrous' one, as it was the second for Decatur in conference play. Since that time they edged Bluffton, knocked off previously unbeaten New Haven and then ended Angola’s hopes Wednesday afternoon. IM Overall The Jackets thus finished their season with a 5-2 NEIC mark good for second place, and a 10-4 overall record. But for that one bad inning at Columbia City, the conference record would have been 6-1 and good for a share of the title with the winner of today’s game between Concordia and New Haven, each of whom have 5-1 marks. Angola finished at 5-2 tied with Decatur. Cookson Shutout Cookson, working with just one day of rest, ended a brilliant high school career Wednesday as he shut out the Hornets on just one hit, boosting his season record to a fine 7-3, and 5-2 in conference play. It was his second one-hit shutK out in three days, and he ended his high school hurling with a string of 19 consecutive scoreless innings. Third baseman Don Feased got Cookson the only run he needed in the third inning when he singled, advanced on Angola’s lone error, and romped home on a wild pitch. Greg Ladd started the fourth frame with a walk, stole second and third and came home on another wild pitch, boosting Decatur’s margin to two runs. The senior catcher added the final run of the season when he finished his career with a booming home run in the sixth that cleared the fence, his second four-base blow of the spring. Lynn Maugherman was tough on the Decatur hitters, allowing just the single by Feasel and Ladd’s home run, as he struck out 10 and walked three. His wildness — and the. home run ball to Ladd — were his downfall, however. Cookson whiffed 11 and issued only one walk, to the first hitter in the game.TSßK,' Angola's’ffrsH baseman and the son of form,er Adams Central coach Leroy Cable, ruined Cookson’s no-hit bid when he singled with two out in the fourth inning. But that was it for Angola, as Cookson shut the door completely with his blazing speed. He fanned Hammel to end the fourth, struck out the side in the fifth, struck out one and got two hitters to fly out in the sixth, and then whiffed the side again in the seventh. - DECATUR - AB R HE Egly, 2b 2 0 0 2 Elliott, cf 3 0 0 0 Ladd, c 2 2 10 S. Fourth Win By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sports Writer Bob Gibsoq of the St. Louis Cardinals could wind up as either the pitcher of the year or the enigma of the year—or maybe even both. So far, he has a perfect record: Four victories against no defeats. Off hand, that sounds like he has it made but the hard-throwing 28-year-old righthander says he’s baffled by one problem. “Why does it take so long for me to win a ball game?" he asks. No one seems to know the answer. For example, his brilliant 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs Wednesday night was his first win in 11 days. And before that it took him 20 days before he won a ball game. Gibson struck out 12 men, did not walk any and yielded only four singles in what was easily his finest performance of the season. Larry Jackson was almost as good but ran afoul of singles by Dick Groat, Ken Boyer and Bill White in the eighth inning and that was the ball game. Allows Eight Hits Jackson allowed eight singles in all but they were enough to result in his third loss compared with five victories. The Phillies climbed back into first place with a 7-2 victory over the Giants while the Braves beat the Reds, 7-3, on Joe Torre’s grand slam in the ninth inning. The Dodgers defeated the Met?, 4-1, and the Pirates clipped the Colts, 4-3. In the American League, the Twins trounced the Yankees, 74, the Orioles knocked over the Athletics, 8-3, the Red Sox beat the Angels, 4-3, and the Senators swamped the Tigers, 10-3, in the only games scheduled. Johnny Callison personally ruined the Giants with a perfect day that consisted of a home run and four singles that accounted for three RBI s. Richie Allen and Wes Covmgton also homered for the Phillies in a 14-hit attack that dealt Juan Marichal hi's first loss following six straight victories. Screwballer Jack Baldschun held the Giants to one hit over the last 4 2-3 innings for his second victory. Purkey Takes Loss Torre’s homer with the bases full for the Braves came off Joey Jay although Bob Purkey (1-3) was charged with the defeat Southpaw Billy Hoeft came on with the bases full and one out in the ninth to strike out Vada Pinson and Marty Keough, and preserve Denny Lemaster’s fourth victory. - ' ~ , Nick Willhite held the Mets to six hits before being lifted for a pinchhitter in the eighth as he recorded his second win in five decisions. Frank Howard singled in one run off loser Ron Locke in the first inning and scored another in the fourth on Doug Camilli’s single. Jerry Lynch’s two-run homer in the first inning gave the Pirates a lead they never relinquished and they went on to edge the Colts on the combined five-hit pitching of winner Bob Veale (3-3) and Al Mcßean. Walt Bond hit his seventh homer for Houston. Don Nottebart, who has yet to win one, absorbed his sixth consecutive defeat. • New York Stock Exchange Price midday prices i A. Rookies Star As Senators, Red Sox Win By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sports Writer Sometimes the guys who are paid the least are the ones who produce the most. That was precisely the case Wednesday night when John Kennedy of the Washington Senators and Dalton Jones of the Boston Red Sox, a pair of bench-warmers who are working for approximately the $7,000-a-year minimum, both came up With maximum performances. Kennedy, given a chance at shortstop only because regular Ed . Brinkman had slumped to .157, blasted two homers and a single to drive in three runs and pace the Senators to a 10-3 triumph over the Detroit Tigers. Jones earned his letter with the Red Sox in similar fashion. Named to the starting line-up largely because of his pinch three-run double in the ninth infflng the night before, the rookie second baseman, drove in the tying run with a key seventh inning double and set up the winning one in Boston's 4-3 victory over the Los Ageles Angels. Starts Attack The 22-year-old Kennedy started Washington’s 12-hit attack with his first homer of the game in the opening inning off loser Ed Rakow (0-3), hit his second circuit in the fifth at the expense of Julio Navarro and then singled home another run during a five-run seventh after homers by Bill Freehan and George Thomas had narrowed the Tigers’ deficit to 5-3. Southpaw Claude Osteen registered his third win in seven decisions with help from Tom Cheney in the seventh. Jones, who beat the Angels, 4-3, on Tuesday night with a pinch double off Don Lee, picked on Bob Lee Wednesday night with the Red Sox trailing 3-2 in the seventh. He drilled a double with runners on first and second, to tie the score and move (Roman Mejias to third, from where Mejias scored the winning run on Ed Bressoud’s infield hit. Jack Lamabe limited the Angels to six hits during the seven innings he worked and received his fourth victory when Dick Radatz hurled scoreless ball over the last two innings. Harmon Killebrew crashed a pair of 400-foot homers to power the Minnesota Twins to a 7-4 win over the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles downed the Kansas City A’s, 8-3, in the only other American League games scheduled. Phillies On Top The Philadelphia Phillies regained first place in the National League with a 7-2 win over the San Francisco Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals nipped the Chicago Cubs, 1-0, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Houston Colts, 4-3, the Milwaukee Braves racked up the Cincinnati Reds, 7-3, and the Los Angeles Dodgers downed the New York Mets, 4-1. Killebrew’s 10th and 11th homers of the season plus rookie Tony Oliva’s eighth raised the Twins’ home run total to 61 in 32 games in their assault of the all-time record of 240 set by the Yankees in 1961. Ralph Terry never got past the first inning and suffered his third defeat in four decisions. Camilo Pascual brought his record, to 5-2 by striking out nine and giving up eight hits, including a ninth inning homer by Johnny Blanchard. Milt Pappas held the A’s to five hits ad breezed to his third victory when the Orioles erupted for five runs in the fifth inning off loser Diego Segui and reliever Jack Aker. Boog Powell’s seventh homer capped the rally. Willie Kirkland had three of Baltimore’s 13 hits. Brooks Robinson drove in three runs and Luis Aparicio stole three bases.

Hooker said hot weather brought about a heavy demand for water for lawn sprinkling and the demand exceeded 9 million gallons a day compared with a 7t4 to 8 million gallon capacity. Hooker asked residents to stop car washing and to use water sparingly for lawns and shrubs. A new pump scheduled to boost the capacity by 5 million gallons is to be installed between June 15 and July 1.

ed base on errors, Ashton scoring on the second miscue. Winning Rally After Myers got Summerset to pop out and fanned Rees, D. Kiehl produced a single and the Ohio lads had a 3-0 lead. As it turned out, this was plenty of runs, as the Commodores were unable to get anything started against Boley. The Lincolnview hurler set down the first 10 hitters he faced, until Myers spoiled his nohitter bid with a one-out single in the fourth inning. Myers was caught attempting to steal, however, and Boley forced Omlor to pop out and end the inning. Last Runner The Commodores got their second and last baserunner when Dave Hackman was hit by a pitch leading off the fifth frame. He was forced at second, and Boley got the next two batters to end the mild threat. He then retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh Innings. LINCOLNVIEW AB R H E S.
