DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT Published Every Evening Except Sunday by THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT CO, INC. Entered at the Decatur, Ind., Post Office as Second Class Matter Dick D. Heller, Jr. -— President Mrs John Shirk Vice President Mrs. A. R. Holthouse *— Secretary Chas. E. Holtbouse Treasurer A Warning to Parents A bomb shell was dropped into the laps of those complacent parents — so hynotized by their television sets, and other opiates, that they haven’t been paying close attention to their children —by Judge Parrish’s speech to the mental health association Thursday night The thought of little innocent children, and some not so innocent, destroying—yes, irrversibily destroying — their brain cells by sniffing glue, gasoline, and paint thinner is enough to curl the hair of any thinking parent. With school nearly out, we must think of the spare time that our youngsters will have this summer. Sure, there is plenty to do. There’s swimming at the local pool; moviesboy scouts and girl scouts; Little League, pony league, and Wildcat league ’baseball; vacations; church camp; Bible school; the summer reading program at the library; mowing lawns, etc. But it is not enough to say there’s plenty to do. Parents had better be interested enough in their own children to take the time to see that their children are enjoying the summer. Wouldn’t it be horrible to wake up next fall to find out that your child had been led into some horrible habit that was endangering his health —a habit he could not break without medical help? Think of your older son or daughter out in an auto, all buzzed up, speeding down the highway with wild abandon — until the moment of reckoning. Every summer we have needless accidents, needless' pain and death, because we allow our children to develop bad habits, or associate with wild, ungovernable youths. If you want this to be a good summer, with — • a good school year foillowing it, it might be well to resolve right now to spend enough time with your children, young and old, to know what they are doing, and to be assured in your own mind that it is safe and sane. A generation of self-rpade morons, mentally degenerate and habitually “sniffing,” or maimed for life in a senseless wreck, is a very unpleasant thought. Editorial written by Dick Heller
