500-Mile Trials To Open Next Saturday INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — The Speedway’s daredevils had five more dbys today to work the bugs out of their intricate machines in preparation for initial 500-mile race time trials. Qualifications to select the fastest 33 starters will get under way Saturday amid predictions that the one and four-lap records held by defending “500” champion Parnelli Jones will be shattered by at least a dozen drivers, Jones holds the unofficial practice record of 156.2 miles • per hour in the same fourcylinder roadster which carried him to victory last year. He also has a new rear - engine machine at his disposal but has experienced nothing but mechanical problems with it so far. Sunday, after he was clocked at an average speed of 152.794 mph, more trouble beset him when the new car didn’t handle right but he averted a possible crash by pulling off the course. The day’s fastest clocking was posted by Jim McElreath in one of the powerful Novis at 154.533 mph and two-time winner Rodger Ward got his new rear-engine machine up to 153.8. Jones,•, McElreath, Bobby Marshamn, Ward and national champion A. J. Foyt were among the top contenders for Saturday’s pole position, which goes to the fastest first-day qualifier. One crash marred weekend practice. Mexico’s Pedro Rodriguez was slightly injured and hospitalized .and his new rearengine creation was extensively damaged when he lost control and smacked the wall in the southwest turn, the third crash since the track opened May 1. Eddie Sachs, twice winner of the pole spot, spun and slid through the northeast turn Sunday with no damage to either car or driver. At least 20,000 fans watched Sunday’s practice session under near-ideal weather conditions. Three Are Arrested On Traffic Counts Drivers from Marion, Craigville and Decatur have been cited to appear in justice of the peace court following city police arrests this past weekend. James Arden Julian. 22-year-old resident of route 1. Craigville, was charged with reckless driving at 8:30 p.m. Sunday on 13th street. He is to appear in J. P. court Tuesday. Walter Alan Riddle, 17, of Marion, is slated to appear Saturday. May 16, to fdce charges of failing to have a valid operator’s license. He was arrested at 5:15 p.m. Sunday on 11th street. Charles P. Buckley, 17, of 209 N. 16th St., was charged with reckless driving at 11:15 p.m. Sunday on 13th street, and is scheduled to appear this afternoon.
outdoor exhibits revive scenes of earlier years, such as, an oldtime threshing rig in action, and typical scenes of a barnyard (containing a wagon shed and farm wagons. Implements needed in everyday living at the turn of the century include the “Schnitzelbond” or cutting bench, and the familiar sawbuck. Other outdoor exhibits include poultry displays with young chicks being hatched in an incubator. The old dinner bell and the wooden pump, the village blacksmith and the applebutter boilers are all a part of the early “Dutch” way of life. Every visitor during the sixday event will have ample opportunity to sit down to famous family-style and home-cooked meals. Corn, soup and barbe-' cued chicken and shoo-fly pie will be available at reasonable prices. Rounding out the activities will be a display of valuable coins and stamps, an antique show and dally free concerts in the Hershey Park bandshell. * Seventy members of the Pennsylvania state police will demonstrate their skill in jumping techniques, motorcycle drills and with trained police dogs.
