Kizer, Hobert Butler, Henry Schricker Advise Voting Against Gov. Wallace Tuesday
Sen. Marshall F. Kizer, of Plymouth, one of seven announced candidates for the Democratic nomination for governor of Indiana, and Robert P. Butler, commissioner of labor, and widely mentioned as a candidate for the' U. S. Senate, have joined Henry F. Schricker, former governor, and other political, religious, and civic leaders of aU parties and faiths in denouncing Wallace, and his lying attacks on the civil rights 'bill. Butler Statement Robert P. Butler, commissioner of labor, said in Indianapolis Friday that a lot of the newspaper ads and speeches made by Governor Wallace of Alabama claim that labor supports Governor Wallace, but that this is not the case at all. “As commissioner of labor, I have had close contact with the labor leadership of Indiana for the past 3*4 years and I have found that labor is not in support of Governor Wallace.’’ “Governor Wallace is preaching a revolution against the United States government. He is doing it under the guise of what he calls States’ Rights, by which the states would again be separate,
For Congress In 1954, in the Democratic primary, there were two candidates for Congress. One was a very wellqualified lawyer; the other a political unknown. To those who attended the meetings, and talked with - the two men, it was quite obvious that the lawyer was capable, and that the other man was — well, to be charitable, a crank. But* no one said much about the race, and the great majority of voters in the Democratic primary never met either candidate, nor knew any thing about them. And io and behold! On primary day, the “crank” with a short, catchy name that everyone could remember, won the nomination. It was very embarassing attending meetings the rest of that year, and we were quite fortunate that this man was not elected - there have been cases where “cranks” have been elected when the rest of the ticket carried so strongly that he was “washed in. Responsible Democrats certainly don’t want this to happen. For that reason, we usually evaluate the congressional candidates for those who. are interested and do not know the men personally. This year the evaluation is very easy. Only one of the men, Max Hbbbs, is a lifelong Democrat. The others have all run in various Republican primaries in this or the fifth district as Republican candidates. Hobbs is a native of Adams county, having been born in Decatur. His family is well-known in this area, and his uncle resides at Hoagland, and is Madison township trustee, and secretary of the —- Madison-Marion school corporation. There are three other candidates. Houtzer, a perennial candidate, resides on the west coast, and hasn’t , been around here in years. Robert Adang is a school teacher in Gary, and quite unpredictable, and unreliable. Rev. Sholty, the most serious of the former Republicans in the Democratic primary, is a retired, elderly missionary and minister who is well-inten-tioned but hardly suited for congress. Therefore, we heartily urge you to vote for Max Hobbs, a Fort Wayne attorney who is wellknown in Adams county, who has worked closely with local attorneys and other local people, and who, if nominated, promises a good, clean, hard campaign against the incumbent Republican. You will not be ashamed if your party nominates and elects Max Hobbs. Editorial written byDick Heller

each with jurisidiction in defiance of Federal government. In other words, what he advocates is a kind of legalized seceding without actual seccession,” Butler continued. Kiser Speaks Oat The following address will be made by state senator Marshall F. Kizer, Democratic minority leader of the Indiana State Senate and candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Indiana, at 8 o’clock p. m. at the John F. Kennedy dinner in Huntington, Ind.: “When I hear of people in Indiana who are accepting the lies and distortions of the Governor of Alabama, I find myself compelled to fight back . . not as a citizen of Indiana, but as an American. “Hie issue of this campaign is not Governor Wallace, nor is it povernor Matthew Welsh. Neither of these two men are serious candidates for the office they seek. The issue of this campaign is much more important. We go to the polls on May sth to defend or to turn our backs on the American way erf life. “When an American says he
loves his country, he is not talking about the banks of the Wabash; he is talking about the shores of die Atlantic and the Pacific, and everything that lies between. He is talking about an inner air — an inner light — in which freedom, lives; where every man is entitled by the Bill of Rights to draw a breath of self nespect. Only True American "I am opposed to a Confederate American, and I am opposed to a Yankee American. There is only one kind of true American. It is the kind who believes we are all American, and that more than half of the people are right more than half of the time. “The state of Indiana is now in its greatest hour. We are at odds with destiny. We have been selected by the decent people of the world to be the standard bearer for the rights of the individual and the Constitution of the United States. “Governor Wallace has told us he is here in Indiana to defend states’ rights. I say, ‘No matter how he tries to slice it, it is still baloney’. “He Is here to try and get the people of Indiana to help him in his battle to save the police state of Alabama. He wants decent people, like you and me, to let him continue his kind of state government, his kind of states’ rights, where the government of the state tolerates the murdering of children, refuses to properly discipline killers, where churches are bombed, dogs are turned loose on people who demonstrate, and police keep records of farmers, factory workers, businessmen, and ministers who speak out against the governor. “Yes, he wants you and me to help him defend his government and his tape-record church services to catch the ministers who use the pulpit to ask their congregation to stand up for decency, fair play, and the American way of life. Wallace Hates Germans “He told the London Times that the (North) is filled with Poles, Italians, Germans and the ‘lesser breeds.’ Yet, as Franklin Delano Roosevelt said. ‘All our people, except the pure Indian, are immigrants or descendants of immigrants—even those who came over on the Mayflower’. “I hope, with all my heart, that the Democratic Party and

the people of Indiana have the courage to face reality; that we, as Americans, will go to the polls with the same kind of courage that took us to Valley Forge and Appomattox. "We must ask ourselves, ‘What is right with our country?’ ‘What is right with our religion?’ ‘What is right with our conscience?’ and then vote accordingly. "We must vote with the ideals of Wilson, Roosevelt, and Kennedy. We must vote for Matthew Welsh because he is the symbol, in this election, of the American. We must, for the memory of Jack Kennedy, ask ourselves ‘Not what the country can do for you, but what you can do for your coun"And then vote as he would have you vote—as he would have voted. “And, as Woodrow Wilson said, ‘When people call me an idealist, I’m thankful, because that is the only way I know I am American’.” o r— ° The People’s Voice This column is for the use of our readers who wish to make suggestions for the general good or discuss questions of interest. No articles will be published without signature of the author. _ ° To the Editor: There is great interest among Hoosiert in the Civil Rights bill now being debated in the Senate. 1 am sure that your newspaper has been doing a splendid job in informing the people of your area about this issue. Although there are conflicting views on this question, I welcome free debate and defend the rgiht of anyone to make his opinions known. There have been some attempts however, to mislead people by spreading misinformation about the provisions of the civil rights bill. Because I know that you are interested in having at your disposal complete and accurate information on this proposal, I am enclosing a reprint of a statement made recently by Representative William M. McCulloch, Republican of Ohio, the ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee. Representative McCulloch, who was instrumental in guiding the bill through the House, states precisely what the civil right bill does and, perhaps more important, exactly what it does not do. I hope you will decide that part, if not all, of this statement vis worthy of calling to the attention of your readers. May I add only one comment? Existing Indiana law is, if anything. more far-reaching than the proposed federal civil right bill. If the bill were an unwarranted invasion of states’ rights, I would oppose it. But all eleven Indiana Congressmen. Republicans and Democrats alike, voted for this bill in the House, and I certainly will do likewise in the Senate. Sincerely, Birch Bayh United States Senator (A summary of these points by Rep. McCulloch, appeared in Friday’s Decatur Daily Democrat, from an article In the New York Times. Editor.) Anderson Physician Enters Guilty Plea ANDERSON, Ind. (UPI) — Dr. Seth Irwin, 82, Anderson, will be sentenced May 22 on a charge of unlawfully selling dangerous drugs. Irwin, who was arrested last October and accused of selling barbiturates and other drugs to teen-agers and other persons, pleaded guilty Friday in Madison Circuit Court. He previously had pleaded innocent.

Democrats Adams & Wells Counties Thanks for your contributions to my primary campaign. I regret that I didn’t campaign in your areas now. I thought for the primary it'was appropriate to just ask those who know my Uncle Bill Adang, who has a farm around Geneva, and those who knew my Father Edward P. Adang for their votes in the primary. After the primary, that’s the time for campaigning and right before the Primary Election Day. I’ll be at Central High School Friday for an opportunity to speak. Whether I get it or not I won’t know until I get there and get introduced. Saturday night is more important to you Democrats (I hope.) There’s a smorgasbord down at Bluffton sponsored by the Wells County Democrats —best of all, the ladies. I’ll be there with megaphone and microphone. Seems I’ve got a speech to give to the Whitley County Farm Bureau, which I’m inviting to attend. Seems I was supposed to give them a talk last Friday night, but the meeting had to be cancelled. Seems them Republicans had a meeting the night before in Columbia City where the Farm Bureau was supposed to have its meeting. Well, they (the Republicans), didn’t have to commit themselves to any issues that way. To the Republicans of Adams County who thought I turned Republican four years ago, I’d like to explain. I was just having a little fun with ‘your’ Congressman. My father passed away a little over two years ago so Adair is still there. He won’t be after November, so join the Democrats meanwhile who know that Adang spells D-E-M-O-C-R-A-T. I thought Adams County and Monroeville should be by-passed for now since Mr. Hobbs was born and raised in your areas. I wouldn’t mind your help though. ROBERT E.
