“The Dreamer,” is carried by the 12 members of the stage baud,
under the 1 direction of Richard Collins. In preparation for the musical play to be presented Friday and Saturday nights in the Decatur high school auditorium, the dance band, assuming the role of the stage band, has been working diligently since December. While the chorus has been able to use class time for rehearsals, the stage band has had to use its own time. A great responsibility lies in the laps of the first chairs, occupied by Pat Collins on the saxophone and Tom Baxter on the trumpet. These seniors have acquired the extra skill necessary to fulfill this responsibility; their absence from the band will be felt when they graduate next month. Other Members Second trumpet is played by Rick Humbles and Marsha Sheets plays third trumpet; Tim Singleton, trombone; Dave Smith, drums. Third saxophone is played by Karen Witte, Barbara Houk, second tenor saxophone; Richard Doty, baritone saxophone; Allen Zerkel, fourth tenor saxophone; Steve Doty, base tuba, and Jean Swickard accompanies on the piano. This year for the first time, extra school credits are being given for participating in the dance band, according to Collins. The policy of the past has been to give half a credit for being in the high school, band, however, a full credit is now being given to members who participate in both the dance band and the regular high school band. Previously Played The varied experiences of the dance band has been to provide dinner music for the D-Club banquet, to appear on Dance Date, and to perform for open house and May concerts. Drajfed in their handsome, new tuxedos, the stage band will be located on the floor directly in front of the stage during “The Dreamer.” A great deal of credit goes to Collins, who introduced the idea of

a dance band to Decatur high school, after directing bands in two previous high schools. He also has played in the Army war show band, played in a band while attending Ball state Teachers College, and toured the Gulf Coast with another band and played with the well-kown “Starlighters.” Regarding the production of “The Dreamer,” Collins said, “The success or failure of any production depends a great deal on the performance of the stage’ band. It has taken professional skill to have mastered the eighteen numbers that they play for this musical play. Hats off to the dance band for the tremendous effort they have put forth!’’ Concert On Friday At Adams Central The Adams Central music department is presenting its annual spring concert Friday evening at 7:30 o’clock.
