Chastity Standard For I. U.*Students BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UPI) —lndiana University expects pre-marital chastity as a “desirable standard” for its students, a university official said Tuesday. * “It is up to the critics of present standards and prohibitions to show that relaxing 'Current standards will serve out best interests,” Dean of Students Robert H. Shaffer said at a university forum. “Until that can be demonstrated, it is necessary for educational institutions to speak out clearly and forcefully regarding desirable standards and behavior. “Otherwise, the standards of our society will be set by the tittering of sophomoric mentalities, the purveyors of pornography or the oversimplified application of scientific research.” Shaffer said there has been a “rash of articles and widespread discussion” of college sex in popular magazines and newspapers. “There must be no misunderstanding regarding the behavior expected by the university,” he said. “It is difficult to make a short and specific statement regarding such complex subjects as mores, customs, standards and moral values. “In summary, however, Indiana University, will continue to support those standards which have served so well our society and the individuals who comprise it.” The university is the home of the Institute for Sex Research, founded by the late Dr. Alfred C. Kinsey who became famous as the author of “Sexual Behavior in the Human Female” and “Sexual Behavior in the Human Male.” Shaffer said rules and procedures established by the division of student personnel will “continue to promote high standards among students by reinforcing that behavior and encouraging situations which support the stand of the university. Efforts will be continued to discourage situations and inhibit behavior which undermine it.” He said there is concern among educators about problems revealed by statistics on aspects of sexual behavior. “However, much of the current writing and discussion is based upon sensational reports, barroom, interviews wAnWB?teur psychiatry,” he added. “Reliable statistics regarding sexual behavior are exceedingly difficult to obtain and interpret.” Kinsey’s studies were based on statistics obtained in personal interviews by a small, select staff of workers using impenetrable codes to hide the identity and information of those interviewed. “Laws regarding the subject, the expectations and demands of parents and the best interests of students all sustain current prohibitions regarding sexual ' behavior," Shaffer said. Vietnamese Capture Huge Arms Cache SAIGON, South Viet Nam (UPI) — Vietnamese government rangers today overran a Communist arms factory in the famous Viet Cong mountain stronghold of Do Xa, capturing massive quantities of modern arms and explosives, an American military spokesman said. The spokesman said 167 weapons were seized from the guerrillas, who fled without fighting. The rangers are taking part in a . large-scale government operation launched Monday against the Communist stronghold some 325 miles northeast of the capital in the rugged central highlands. Two Americans were wounded in the initial assaults on Do Xa and Mang Xin Monday, but government casualties were light despite heavy Communist fire. Names of the U.S. casualties were withheld pending notification of relatives. • Pontiac • GMC New & Used Cars & Trucks EVANS Sales t Service) 126-128 S. First St.
