Jackets Blank Portland By 1-0 Score Thursday

Sam Blythe’s bases-loaded single in the last of the seventh ining gave the Decatur Yellow Jackets their third victory of the spring baseball season without a loss Thursday, a thrilling 1-0 victory over Portland. The contest was shifted to Worthman Field, due to wet grounds at Portland, but the outcome was the same as in a previous game between the two clubs, although yesterday’s contest was much closer than Decatur’s earlier 5-0 victory. Denny Cookson went all the way for the Decaturites, allowing just three singles, while striking out nine and walking three. In 13 innings against Portland this season, Cookson has given up no runs and just three hits.

Singlet in Winner Blythe, who plays first base when not pitching, shared hero honors with Cookson yesterday, however. Brother Bill Blythe started the last of the seventh with a single and Max Elliott drew a walk. Dave Bennett was brought in to relieve Portland starter Stultz, and he promptly balked, sending Blythe and Elliott to third and second. Bennett then walked Greg Ladd intentionally to load the bases, and Blythe followed with a looping single to right field to wrap up the contest. Many Waks Up until Blythe’s heroics, the Jackets had numerous opportunities to score, as Stults issued nine walks in the first six in-

nings. Left fielder Deane Lehman also played a big part in the victory, with two circus catches. He robbed Williams of a base hit in the fifth and hauled in a bid for extra bases by Glasgow, leading off the seventh. x i The Jackets, being directed by assistant coach Gary Giessler in the absence of the hospitalized ! Melchi Sets School Record, Ties Second L 1 k : wBuster Melchi Determination and hard work paid off for a hard-working Decatur high school senior Thursday at Leo, as Buster Melchi set one new school record and tied another in winning a pair of blue ribbons. Melchi continued the assault on the school’s high hurdles record, as he skimmed over the 120 yards and the high barriers is 16 seconds flat, to set a new standard. The former school record of 16.6 had been broken twice this season by both Melchi and Craig McEwan. „ Until yesterday, McEwan held the mark, with 16.1 clocking, but now it is Melchi’s name that goes on the books, for the time-being at least. The way the two are running the highs, the mark will more than likely be lowered again before the end of the season. Ties Lows Mark however, Melchi recorded his name in another spot in the record book, as he tied ■ the low hurdles record for the school. He dashed the 180 yards in 21 and seven-tenths seconds, tieing the mark established in the 1962 season by Jim Elliott. The new marks are honors welldeserved by the husky senior speedster. Melchi, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Melchi,’ of 1016 Russell St., had suffered a disheartening stroke of misfortune by Dame Fortune this fall. A rugged fullback, Melchi was a standout on the football squad and was headed for all-confer-ence honors when he suffered a leg injury about mid-season. He gallantly tried to play several times after the injury, but the leg would not cooperate and all the honors he was heading for suddenly went out the window. Maybe the pendulum of fortune has swung the other way now, though, and Melchi could have his name, and his name alone, in two places among the school record holders in track before this season is over. Yellow Jackets' Track Team Defeated By Leo

A pair of record hurdle performances by Buster Melchi, and winning efforts by Dave Ans- ( paugh and Dave Hanunond, were the only bright spots as Leo soundily thumped the Decatur high school track team by an 85-24 score in a dual meet at the Allen county school Thursday afternoon. The Leo thinlies copped all but four blue ribbons, including both relay races, and swept four events. Dick Boyce, who owns a wind-assisted 10-flat 100-yard dash this spring, copped both short dashes to lead the victory. Melchi, a senior speedster, continued to lower the school record in the high hurdles, and tied ' the school mark in the lows, as he copped both events for Decatur. Anspaugh vaulted 11 feet to cop the pole vault's blue ribbon, and Hammond tossed the shot 46 feet, seven and one-half inches to win that event. Die only other points came from Melchi’s third in the broad jump, Kenny Riffle’s third in the 880-yard run and Tom Whitaker’s third place in the mile run. The Decatur thinlies won’t return to action until next Wednesday, when they compete in the Northeastern Indiana conference meet at Columbia City.
